I am looking for the best scope under $1000 for my M&P 10. I may also put this new scope on my Savage 10 FLCP-K 308. It must be a First/Front focal plane, at least 10X on the high end, side focus, illuminated reticle, etc. I have heard of the Vortex Viper PST 2.5 - 10 x 32. I want to shoot as far as the 308 will shoot. At least 500-800 yards. Any suggestions?

I like my 5x20x50 Trijicon Accupoint. I got mine at a lgs for $980.

I've been running the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP mil/mil for several years now on my .308 Savage FCP HS-Precision rifle. Love it. Broke it in during a 4 day precision rifle course. I have 3 Leupold 6.5X20 EFRs with Dot. I am of modest means for sure. It took me a while me saving up to get them. Today is my 60th Bday, and I have tried A LOT of scopes over the years. I have always ended up with Leupold, and now all my scopes are the "Leuie". The 6.5 x 20 EFR is one heck of a piece of glass! I got my latest one 3 weeks ago from my LGS for 750 out the door. It has matte finish, target turrets and target dot ( all that I have are like that) Regards Ernie

I just mounted a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 with the Mrad Reticle on my M&P10- it is made with a First Focal Plane- the clarity is unreal- You would cheat yourself with a 2-10x on the M&P10- Go for the 6-24x50 and you will not be dissapointed!

On my s&w ar-10 I put a Nikon M-308 on it, sighted it in at 100yrds and it has a BDC reticle on it that goes all the way out to 800yrds. Accuracy is great, love the scope.

I put one of these rigs on my 7.62mm AR with a Bobro 20moa mount. I think this glass is one helluvalot of bang for the buck. I'm very happy with it.

I think you would be real happy with a Vortex Viper. I also think you could probably find a nice used Leupold Mark 4 10x with mil dots for under $1000. It might take a little looking around but they are out there.

I have a Bushnell Elite 6-24x50 on my Savage 10 FCP-SR. It has worked out pretty well so far. It's in the $700 dollar range.





I also have a RRA AR with a SWFA Super Sniper 10x42 that has worked out pretty good as well. It's in the $300 dollar range.

I got a Nikon M-308, 800 BDC for the M&P10. The reviews on it have been very good and it is a scope made specifically for tactical rifles using the .308 Winchester and 7.62X51 round. More specifically, Hornady 168grain Match ammunition. 168 grain and 170something grain bullets are the preferred rounds used by snipers. Looking at the ballistic tables, Hornady A-MAX and Z-MAX have similar ballistic table characteristics. I have not looked at other brands yet but I suspect that as long as they are the same grain and are a jacketed hollow point boat tail, they will be similar as well.

I purchased the Nikoplex model for my Mossberg MVP, which also has good reviews. The average price has been about $549 for the BDC 800 and $529 for the Nikoplex.

Now all I have to do is go to the range and sight them in at 100 yards...

Sorry, I'm slightly thread jacking but I don't know if this constitutes a new threat... I want a long range optic for long range target shooting but I also want a red dot for tactical short range shooting at the range. If I remove the scope, I will have to sight it in again when I remount it, correct?

The 800 BDC sighted right in. About a 2 in group at 100 yards. Free floating the barrel and replacing the factory trigger with a CMC or something better should tighten that up.

The Nikoplex on the other hand is having issues. I couldn't hit a full sheet of plywood with it no matter what I tried. It's going back to Nikon to get looked at and see what is up. The rifle it is on shoot fine. In the black every time at 100 yards with iron sights.

Stay away from Nikon m308. Its not calibrated for your particular rifle and you could use a different grain other than 168. I would go with Vortex PST ffp, SWFA 4-16 ffp, or what I recently bought the Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24x50 ffp for $750. I feel like the one I got was by far the best for the price with the reticle and magnification.

The 800 BDC is on the M&P10. It shot fine. I just used 168 HPBT Match to sight it in for shots longer than 100 yards. The rest of the time it will be much cheaper Lake City or PMC ammunition.

The Nikoplex scope is for my Mossberg MVP. Nikon replaced it with a new one, so I'm guessing there was something very wrong with it. As long as the weather plays nice, I'll take it to the range to try again.

You may be right OhioPatriot308 but the money was already spent, so I'm going to give a whirl. Nikon's sight and none of the search results on reviews mentioned anything about needing a specific rifle, barrel length, and the reviews over all were good to excellent. So, I was willing to give it a whirl. The only specification mentioned anywhere was that the scope is specifically designed with the 168 grain HPBT match.

Looking at the various ballistic tables for the ammunition I mean to use, there isn't a huge difference at closer ranges, so they shouldn't be an issue. Only for longer ranged shots, not that is a lot of shooting opportunities around here that would reach out that far.

I forgot to mention before that Nikon lists the M-308 as an AR Scope, so using it on either rifle shouldn't be an issue.

For that distance for me, it is a close call between the viper pst 4-16x 50 ffp and the swfa ss 3-15x 42 ffp.

I have this scope on one of my most recent builds. It is a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x40mm with duplex reticle and exposed target knobs. They run about $690.

Another vote for Trijicon here. Brought the gun on a hog hunt and the guide dropped it. Reticle was knocked out of whack. Trijicon fixed it with no questions asked.

I can vouch for the Bushnell Elite Tactical. I have the smaller 3-12x44 FFP with G2DMR reticle and like it.

Bushnell has gotten a bad rap. Everyone bases their opinion on their overall product line by their low end stuff. They do make some quality products. You get what you pay for.

Save some frogskins for a good mount.

I have a bunch of rifles with Leupold scopes, but I decided to try something different on my M&P10. I put a Weaver Extreme 3-10x 50mm with illuminated duplex reticule. I am impressed. Large exit pupil, 3.2 inch eye relief, bright bright image, resettable controls, side focus. All this for $399. Now I don't know how many seasons it will hold up, but so far so good.

On my Remington 700PSS I have the big Leupold 6.5-24 with target turrets. Very nice scope. Cost twice as much as the rifle. But I fight with it every time I shoulder the rifle. Even dialed back to 6.5, the exit pupil is still small and requires contortions to find the target. On a rest, when I have plenty of time to get settled, crank it to 24x and it is very good. But in any fast moving situation, I find the Weaver is much better. The big bright image is *right there* for me when I throw the rifle to my shoulder, yet with 10x available, it lets me see to reach out and touch someone. Since the M&P10 is more of a designated marksman's weapon than the sniper weapon a 700PSS is, I think it is a mistake to saddle it with a big sniper scope like the Leupold.

The SWFA, being an excellent scope for the money, is NOT a lit reticle, correct?

Same with the Nikon BDC800 or 308?

The SWFA 3-15x42 is not illuminated.

OTOH, I have the 3-9x42 on my M&P 10. That same scope has been on a Sig 716, a DPMS 308 Recon, and a 300 Blackout. Love that scope!

Vortex PST FFP Illuminated Reticle.

Pick your power, either in 4-16x50 or 6-24x50. The 6-24 version has an available Horus-type reticle (EBR-2).

Just finished this build earlier this week with the 6-24x50.

Just ordered two Nightforce SHV scopes, a 4-14x56 (for a DDM4V11 S2W) and a 5-20x56 (for a Savage 10 FLCP-K in 306). Both have illuminated reticles. The M&P10 will have to settle for the Weaver V-16 (4-16x42) until next fall. These NF scopes are close to or just over $1000 each. They claim they can't be beat by scopes costing the same.

Hey LC - Curious. NF are good scopes, but did you have a specific reason for opting for Second Focal Plane?

I decided that it was between Leupold and NF. I wanted the capability to shoot 600 yards with my DDM4 S2W and 1000 yards with my Savage 10 FLCP-K. The Second Focal Plane scopes fit my budget, roughly $2000 for both scopes, and the first focal plane scopes by these makers did not. I know there are other brands of FFP scopes that would have fit my budget. I also liked the idea of the illuminated MOAR reticle and the .25 MOA clicks. I also liked the adjustment range of the NF scopes. I guess I just wanted to try the NF SHV scopes.

Very USMC M-40(ish) AWSOME rifle!!!!!! I had the opportunity to use an M-40A1 in the Corps in the early 80's (one of my best friends was in STA platoon 3/9 at Pendleton) and that damn thing was a scalpel amongst chainsaws!!! They issued HEAVY AMMO but could reach out to 1000m with that rifle.... Shots like that will probably never (or very rarely) be happening with a semi/AR platform rifle (IMO) but I guess ya never know! Thanks for sharing this great instrument of freedom! AWSOME!!!!

I'm currently running a Leupold Vxr 3-9 on mine, but I've ran several different optics from an 4x ACOG to the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x ... Trijicon just released the new 1-6 x Accupoint and I think it retails for around $1200. That's a really good deal for a nice optic. Also check out the Bortex 1-6.
