Hey all. I want to get a quick-release bipod for my M&P 10. I have the standard, black, version of the rifle and would prefer one that I can put on ant take off quickly as I don’t want one mounted on it all the time. Any thoughts?

Also: I don't mount a rail on the underside of my handguard and would like to avoid doing so as I find it uncomfortable. something that attaches directly to the barrel would be best.

Mounting a bipod to the barrel is a very bad idea. Once placed the weapon on it and load the bipod for your shot you will be flexing your barrel and decrease your accuracy. I'm guessing you using the stock handguard. If so I guess your stuck with that option but I can't imagine you'll experience the accuracy the weapon is capable of.

I had something similar to this on my AR-15. I put it at the very end of the hand guard and it worked fine with my bipod. The bipod is just a cheap-o Caldwell bipod.

I have a mid-length Magpul handguard. I just don't really like the idea of mounting an underside rail because I tend to hold it at the far end.

Harris bipods are hard to beat. They come in various sizes from 6" extended to 27" so you can find one for your specific needs. Harris sells all kinds of adapters. One should fit a basic Magpul. Give them a call if you can't find an adapter on their web page.

If you mount the gun w/ an extended support hand in the "High C" position or the traditional palm under the fore-end, any bipod will get in your way. I hear that you don't want something interfering or tearing up your hand while shooting un-supported or off-hand.
I don't use fore-end mounted grips anymore because it slows my response and accuracy while driving the gun on multiple targets. What I have found useful though is to mount a 2" rail to the underside of the fore-end at the muzzle end. When a bipod is detached, you can use it like an index mark to train for consistent hand position.
My preferred method is using the Altas bipod w/ the quick release levers. The Atlas has full leg rotation from front to back, locks in place at any angle, and be used as a fore-end grip for transitions, climbing, etc. It allows preload to control recoil for follow-ups. It is not cheap- $250 but is worth it if you want to excel in your tradecraft. Harris bipods are the only other systems that I would use on my guns. Sorry, I'm spoiled- JMHO

And- Do not mount anything directly to the barrel, it will screw w/ barrel harmonics and you're accuracy will be affected.

Do NOT mount the bipod to the barrel.

Harris sells a sling stud that you can mount thru the lower part of the hand guard that you can attach a Harris bipod to. I've ued it to mount a Harris on my Colt 6600 HBAR. I suggest the 6-9 inch version with the swivel feature.

Get an Atlas and never look back!

I agree an Atlas is the best bipod i've used. But the OP would have to install a picatinny raid to put on an Atlas.
