Cheap .223 ammo
Is there a quality bulk or cheap ammo that everyone likes? I see the local Wally World has the Federal, in value pack (100 rnds for 40 bucks) or 20 rnds for 6 bucks (gee, I thought value attached to something meant a better deal???).
Well needless to say, they have loads of 'value' packs, and never have any of the 20 rnd boxes. Those are the only boxes they sell in 223.
When I bought my 15A, I picked up a couple boxes of RAM ammunition at the show, it said NEW. Bought a 50 rnd box of 223 and 5.56, 16 bucks a box. It's not the nicest looking ammo, cases weren't nice and shiny, and they weren't stamped with round indication on the base. I just got through warming up my M&P, went through all 100 rnds, no issues at all, but didn't save the cases, since they weren't stamped with a caliber. I haven't checked in to how economical it will be to reload 223, I reload 243 and 30-06, 9 and 40 cal.

I wait for sales on TulAmmo .223 & Cabela's Herters .223.
The last time Cabela's ran a sale Herter's .223 55gr JHP steel case was $4.56 per box of 20 cartridges. I got there a little late, and scooped up the last 4 boxes they had.

I get my ammo from Surplus Ammo, good prices and great people to do business with. But I live about 1 1/2 hour away and can go pick it up at the store.

3 hours round trip. 150 miles maybe? At 20 mpg you use about 7-8 gallons of gas. At 3.50 a gallon, you spend about $25-$26 for gas. 500 rounds at $150 +the $25 in gas that works out to
.35 a round. Not so cheap but what the heck, it's still fun.
I figured out how much money I've saved reloading my own and you still got me beat.
It's all good.

At my local gun shows, the Wolf/WPA goes for $190 per 1000 rounds. The rifle eats it well, it is pretty accurate, and I have no complaints. There have been a couple dead primers, but that is a small issue when you are talking plinking ammo and say 8500 rounds so far int he last 8 months. ( I shoot a lot, and have 2 sons who mow thru ammo like it is made of Cheetos and Dr. Pepper......) SGAmmo has had some good deals for ammo shipped.
While I do keep some XM855 cased up and in my ditch bag, that stuff is far too expensive to train with on a bi-weekly basis. And, it is no more or less accurate than the Wolf ammo.

I've used Wolf ammo in my pistols before without issue, but it's hard to come by around here. TulAmmo is the cheapest Walmart has, but only in select pistol calibers.
That RAM ammunition is the bulk stuff at the local gun shows I go to, seems like you can buy a ammo can full, thinking 500 rounds for 150.00. It doesn't look the best, but of the 300 rnds or so I've bought of it in various calibers, it's worked good. My pickens are slim here in the sticks, I think I'm going to have to suck it up and buy that value pack at Walmart to tied me over until they get the 20 round boxes in, I'm about out and I just don't sleep right unless I have ammo on hand for ever gun. Only got 20 rounds left...
I hear what you say about the two sons going through ammo, fortunately mine shoot .22, but they always want to try a few rounds of everything I take out when we shoot.

I know it is not cheap to buy 1k or even 2k rounds, but the cost is nearly HALF what you are paying. And yes, shipping is like $20-45. But then again, take an hour or more of your time, and then add in the gas to get from the sticks to a WalMart or maybe a gun store who sells bulk ammo. Suddenly, the $45 shipping is a decent bet!
Both my boys are full size- 21 and 16. A BIG 16! He is going to be a gunner, no doubt about that. My dilemma?? He rams ammo thru the 308 like it is tossing pennies into a well. And even using Wolf ammo, the 308 runs like $180 per 500. No way on earth am I buying match ammo for that rifle. 1 mag, and a box will disappear in about 1 minute of controlled 300yd steel drilling.
Here is a link: $199 per 1k TulAmmo- 62gr. 223 HP. It's pretty good ammo. $16 shipping. http://www.sgammo.com/product/tula/1...rain-tula-ammo

"It's all good" So true. I only make the trip every couple of months and I usually make a day out of it and hit several shops down and back. I'm my wife's 24/7 caregiver so it's a break for me and some needed down time. But your right, adding time and gas I could probably mail-order it cheaper but I really hate mail-ordering anything. Besides I like to support the local shops whenever I can. And they let me drool over stuff I can't afford!!!!!!!

223 ammo
I use ammo from Dicks gun Shop for the last 12 yrs and have been very happy. His 223 runs in everything even colts!!. I have used his handgun ammo with great results, clean, accurate, repeatable. He runs about .31/rd for 223 , shiny brass, clean powder, accurate. He is listed on Gun Broker, or you can PM me for his ammo. I have avoided the steel cases in handguns and my AR's, great for the AK's/SKS. Be Safe.

Perhaps they were stamped with something like FC 11 or maybe LC 09 or something along those lines?

Don't have any 223 left, but what's left in the 5.56 box of RAM ammo does say LC 09 on the bottom.

Has anyone used American Eagle 223 ?
Is there any difference between using 223 or 5.56 ?
I plan on reloading and I am in the process of accumulating cases.

It's pretty good. Used to use their 30-06 for target shooting when it was less expensive a while back. The 223 is pretty good.
There is no practical difference between 223 and 5.56

Shooting 223 ammo in a 5.56 chamber gives a tiny bit of play in the throat, said to cause long range accuracy issues.
The preassure between the two is a little different, there's a real good article on it on line.
it talks about accuracy
Throat clearance
Barrel pressures between barrels that are stamped 223 only vs. 5.56.

Hey Sarge can you post a link to the article? Ok those who reload, do you reload to 5.56 specs or .223 specs, as I understand there is a difference and I dont know what it is yet. We have started collecting brass cases because I reload for most all of my Dad's and my guns. To quote a line for Crracer "out here in the sticks" only my sticks are a little further out than his, the ammo choices are slim and none and most of the time none is sitting in the chair. Just wondering cause I would rather load to 5.56 just because there is some difference. And what does the LC-09 stamping signify?

LC is Lake City brass. The 09 might just be the year, or a mfg code for a lot.

Hey oneye,
I just read 10 pages and havent found that article, but I will keep looking,
It was a gun digest article or something like that, possibly chuck hawks.
It even had pictures showing the case differences, something like he 5.56 NATO is a couple thou. longer at the throat, and NATO brass is thicker creating more preassure. But the biggest deal, was actual barrel pressures as a 223 spec. barrel shooting a 5.56 NATO is pushing the presssure limits in a 223.
It was a good read.

Sarge, I read a bunch of pages this morning and saw alot of good info...I believe for my style of Pdog hunting I am going to stay with my 4x16x40 scope and 5.56x45 ammo and I will load 55 grain bullets to the 5.56 specs. I think this will give me the best performance IMHO

At the gunshow yesterday the .223 ammo was pretty outrageous. I saw American Eagle tracer going for a buck a bullet and Tulammo going for $6 a box of 20. Ram in the 50 round box was going for $30 or higher it was absolutely crazy. Dad and I bought some reloading supplies that were reasonably priced but the dealer who had the best selection of brass and bullets turned out to be a PR!<K!!! I actually put the bullets that we wanted back in there bins and was ready to walk away but the prices were good and he had what we wanted so we bought them and then we left the gunshow. I really dislike rude, obnoxious, overbearing salesmen almost as much as I dislike gun snobs.

Nice.
I personally only shoot one type of ammo once I find what work best.
My sport really likes Federal LC, 5.56 XM 193 fmjbt....55gr....... Wicked accurate.
Bulk loose paks are the cheapest way to buy. can be found for 299 per thou.

They had the federal 5.56 1000 round box for $329 but I opted for 10 boxes if the American Eagle for the range to pick up and reload and 25 boxes of the Wolf for when it's not practical to pick up.
Does anyone use a brass catcher if so what kind and does it work?

That was manufactured under gov't contract at the Lake City arsenal. So LC is the plant and 09 is the year, 2009.

Hey guys. New to the forum. Not new to loving shooting. I've purchased from Freedom Munitions 5.56 reloads 62 gr penetrator for $279/1000 plus shipping. Ammo was fine. Not a single problem so far. Also new Federal 62 gr FMJ in ammo can on stripper clips for $169/420 rounds. Lucky Gunner ships really fast usually have ammom within 2-3 days. Freedom not so fast but cheaper. I've purchased other ammo from both. Good deals.

I have an order for 1000 rnds of 55gr reloads from freedommunitions.com ($275 shipped). I placed the order Tuesday night (2/28) and got a tracking number this morning (3/2). I did send an email to them Wednesday night asking for a shipping status (after reading some less than positive comments about them on several boards). Got a reply last night from Rudy saying that they're swamped but that my order would ship today.
I also ordered 1000 rnds of Lake City 55gr at sportsmansguide.com when it came off backorder status ($345 shipped). They didn't have 1000 rnd boxes so I ordered two 500 rnd ones, but it came out cheaper than their 1000 rnd box price.

I know in my area 223/556 is starting to become hard to find. Even a lot of the online places are sold out. Tax refund rush I guess.

Also new Federal 62 gr FMJ in ammo can on stripper clips for $169/420 rounds. Lucky Gunner ships really fast usually have ammom within 2-3 days. Freedom not so fast but cheaper. I've purchased other ammo from both. Good deals.

Sir, which firearm are you shooting and what is your barrel, wondering cause I have been thinking about the 62 grain. Supposedly it is more stable at distance and I am shooting distance with most of my hunting.

Does anyone use a brass catcher if so what kind and does it work?

for bench use. club range has grass the conceals spent brass.
made a brass catcher($4.23) out of 1/2" pvc(a U shaped base,
filled with spent .45acp slugs)
used 2 elbows for corners and 2 T fittings for the front of U shaped pvc base.
shaped a thick soft galvanized wire into a U shape, then bound(twist ties) a laundry bag netting shaped into a U shaped "butterfly net" to insert into the T fittings base.
mouth and base dimensions are ~12 high and 18"wide.
the net device can be turned opposite ways to get close to the ejection port or further away.
can use pvc for the butterfly net rim, just takes more fittings.
net and base takes apart for portability.
nothing is glued.

Federal Fusion in 62 grain or 75 grain. Match grade ammo, and it hold together and retain weight after giving up as much expansion as absolutely possible.

I use a Caldwell brass catcher, but i had to fiddle with it a little to work with my scope mounts, works great now. As I try to catch all my brass (even .22's, recycle to offset money spent), I use a painter's tarp rigged on a baseball return net off to my right side to make collecting all the brass easier, I have the space to set it up. You may not, it works real well for me.

There is an ammo vendor out of California that is at every gun show I attend. They sell 500 rounds for $129.99 in an ammo can. Brass cased. Very good plinking ammo.

I took my brand new Sport out to the range today and shot 200 rounds of freedommunitions.com 55g reloads. Not a single failure of any kind and was able to keep 10 rounds in a 2" circle at 100 yards. It was $276 for 1000 rounds shipped last week, but looking at the site today, the price has gone up $20.

I just got a box of 1000 Tula 62 grain for $243 with shipping from BulkAmmo.com. I ordered on Wednesday, and got it on Friday. They're in Georgia, I'm in Texas.

I was going to order some from those guys. I've heard some good reviews on another forum as well. Not a bad deal for brass cased ammo.
