Thinking about buying an M&P15

I'm the market for an M&P15, either the MOE or the X variant. My question is for those who own or are issued these rifles, what is your impression of them? Thanks!

I have a Sport, modified to a point of it doesnt look like a sport but other than a spring kit and a little polishing on the trigger she is a Sport underneath all the fancy stuff. My M&P15 is "AWESOME." If you can find one with the 1-8 5R Melonite barrel you will not be sorry no matter what "body style" you get. I dont believe you will find someone on the forum who owns an M&P15 who will say different. You will find people on this forum who own just about everybrand out there and I think it is because we aren't gun snobs (for the most part) but the M&P15 series of rifles are a great buy and usually you can get a real fine one for a decent price.

I bought the X model about a month ago and I absolutely love it. It’s a bit more money than some of the other models, and certainly more than the Sport models, but it had everything I wanted (short quad-rail, forward assist, dust cover, etc.). I wanted something that looked identical to what our military and special forces carry, and I got that with the X. It also shoots like a dream which is pretty important too…

You really can’t go wrong with any of the S&W AR’s. They are all high quality and very very reliable. I’d be happy to answer any questions about the X model if you need it.

These rifles are highly regarded by all of us here, and also in the printed press. The worst part of owning an M&P 15 is trying to decide which model to get and then trying not to spend an equal amount on accessories. I too own a Sport and the Melonite barrel is a plus, but all the other models will certainly serve you well and long. Enjoy the chase to find one you like and the shooting that follows.

EXACTLY.... thats why i started reloading

I also have a M&P Sport....absolutely LOVE it. i went with the sport Primarily for Cost... No Need for Dust cover or F Assist.... thus the Sport was my choice....

I also have a Bushmaster C15... Great and Light AR.. but the M&P Sport just FEELS and seems Better.... M&P is my play Gun... Bushy C15 is my LONG range REACH OUT AND TOUCH someone gun....

That's why when you buy a M&P 15 of any flavor, it should be immediately backed up by a 15-22.

AR function & fun, $20 for a 550rd brick of .22lr ammo.

Just to throw another option at you, have you considered the M&P 15T? Are you planning to run optics? The 15t gives you the quad rail and flip up buis up front instead of the fixed front sight.

The two rifles you are considering are quite different from each other. The 15T splits some of the features between the two. Good luck deciding. I own the Sport as well. Decision was easy for me though, I'm cheap!

I have the M&P 15 MOE FDE. It has been discontinued. I really like it. I shot it with the iron sights for awhile and then mounted a Truglo red dot on it. It shoots well for my use which is mainly short range plinking(Zombies,cans,targets,etc). It shoots about 1/2 inc groups at 50 yards as set up. The only other thing I`ve added at this point is a single point sling.

I too have an MOE (also discontinued) and love mine. I have shot close to 1000 rounds and most (90%) has been steel cased Russian stuff. Mine has been 100% reliable and as accurate as I can shoot. I have put a couple of different types of optics on it ranging from a Lucid HD 7 (great red dot) to my current optic a Burris AR332.
If you can find one, IMHO the MOE is the way to go. The stock is the upgraded Magpul version and the hand guard and grip just feel right.
Take the plunge-----you will be a happy camper.

Don't think about it just buy it! if you start thinking about it you may talk yourself out it and neglect yourself of a great rifle.

If you have done any reading on this forum you would have read that 99% of S&W AR owners are happy with their rifles. Plus you get all the AR support from members here who can share a world of knowledge. Besides they are all pretty cool too! ....Oh and welcome to the forum!

You'll find the M&P highly regarded here but also respected on other AR sites. That hasn't always been the case as just a few years ago, it was the "newer" entry into a crowded market. Over the years, it's proven to be a solid rifle with most of the parts being made in house. Not many other manufacturers can claim that. It's also been extremely reliable and pretty much problem free. For what you are paying in the M&P X, T or MOE range, there are other options and manufacturers. We all saw and heard the same during our research. However, for me, I wanted the M&P. With all else being equal (and the M&P seemingly more reliable) that's what I went with.

And I'll echo the 15-22 comment. It's great to shoot the 5.56 but blowing through 10 mags of .22 is an economical way to add to the fun. Best of luck!

Im going to be honest here and say that I do like my M&P AR alot but, I would never buy another Carbine again that didnt use a midlength gas system. My M&P is over gassed and to help with cycling and recoil ive installed a Spikes H2 buffer. I dont know the specs of the X model but the MOE im sure has the Carbine length system just like the standard versions. Also I would just go ahead and drop the extra cash for one with a quad rail aready installed. Lastly I wouldnt buy one that didnt have at least a 1/8 twist rate preferably 1/7. They make a T model that comes with a 1/8 twist barrel thats listed at $1,150 which im sure you can find for less.
