Hey guys, I'm looking to get a bipod for my MP-15 so I can shoot it off a bench at the range. My particular model (81100) does not have a bottom rail or sling swivel post to mount a bipod. Would like to do this without changing the foregrip to accommodate a bottom rail.

Any thoughts on getting a bipod that attaches to the bayonet lug, or mounts directly around barrel? Would a barrel mounted bipod affect performance or accuacy? TIA

They have some clamp type bipods that spring load attach to the barrel, kinda like salad tongs. You just use them when you want to use them, store them otherwise.

You do not mount bipods or similar devices to barrels. For the same reasons you free float a barrel, you don't use the barrel to support your weapon while firing.

Learn to shoot off of a backpack or something similar....it works well and you will find it more accurate than using a bi-pod.

I really have been looking at getting one of these for Pdog and predator hunting, the come apart and fold up so flat you can carry it in a pouch or a pocket and the price looks real good also, I have a couple of shooting rests that I prefer but this looks way more portable, any thoughts?

While I agree, for accuracy, you don't want to attach or rest the rifle from the barrel. However, they do make several (although the following link was not was I was talking about) that 'clamp' to the barrel.

Personally, I never really saw what the big deal was, typically the rifle is being rested against the barrel when not in use anyways.

While some people rest the rifle against the barrel when not shooting some people dont. But it you have a bipod attached to your barrel instead of the stock you have put a fulcrum out there and can cause the smallest of deviation in your barrel. I personally do not rest the barrel on a shooting rest or sandbag. I do rest the forward handguard on it but by then you are far enough back to not cause a deviation from the normal at rest position of the barrel. As you well know that a .01 of an inch here may be an inch down range, I realize that is a generality and probably wouldnt be that much but it is still some and could cause you to miss that very precise shot.

Yep, I thoroughly understand all that. I just don't have a single rifle with a free floating barrel, and while I personally believe you are right about making yourself feel better about resting on your hand guard, being closer to the receiver/having less of a stress as opposed to being rested out towards the muzzle.... I will now have a new excuse as to WHY I missed. Previously I had always just assumed it was me and NOT caused by my bench rest/non free floated barrel!

Rod, all of my hunting rifles except the Sport have free floated barrels. I didnt realize the difference until my gunsmith "schooled" me. My sport shoots well but when I can afford it I will free float it also. Yep that is whats too blame when you miss. That's my story and I am sticking too it!! LOL

Yeah I am ate up with the stoopids today, I missed it and it does look to be easy to make with a mill and some material.
Being as I shoot off of the hood of my truck most of the time when I am Pdog hunting and my trucks paint job (thanks to my nephew who gave it to me) is Krylon I am not worried about scratching the paint. It just looks easy to haul and easy to set up and pretty solid. I am trying to decide whether to put it on my list, lower on my list but I think when I can get away with it I will get away with it.

p.s. have you found anything for these rifles that is not pricey for what they are?

Well, When I bought mine (M&P15), the vendor was selling the black pmags, no windows, for 11 bucks. I thought that was a good price

Considerably cheaper than other high capactiy mags for my 22's!

Been doing some research on bipod mounts, and the consensus I'm reading is that it is NOT a good idea to mount one directly to the barrel, as previously mentioned here, but better to mount to the handguard.

Since I do not have a sling swivel post nor a bottom rail I have found two cheap alternatives to adapt my stock handguard to accept a bipod without totally replacing the HG -

1) Attach an aftermarket rail to the bottom such as this -

2) Attach a sling swivel adapter to the bottom forwardsection of the handguard -

From what I have gathered, this will enable you mount a wide variety of bipods from different manufacturers since most have either a picatinny rail or sling swivel post mounting connection.

Now to decide which setup to use and research some bipods......

Yeh, I like it too, just trying to figure out which one will be easier to install for an inexperienced gunsmith like myself.

It's easy to get your hand gaurd off. The ring is spring loaded, just push towards the receiver and slip the bottom half of the hand gaurd off. Installed rail and reinstall hand gaurd.

Thanks for the link, CR......was able to get my handguard off with no problem. Now I have a good idea on how to mount one of these. Think I'm gonna go with the $8 Harris Swivel adapter for now, I can always add extra rails down the road if I need them.

Now to find a bipod I can interchange between my MP-15 and my 308 bolt action.......

I'd like to hear how that sling mount works out. I might be interested in trying one of those out. Just ordered a DMPS upper to put a AR15 together on the cheap and don't want to change out the hand guard (unless I like the one that came off my M&P better).

I've got a bipod that mounts to one on my 597 I could swap back n forth as needed. Of course, going to a gun show this weekend, might find some of those rails as well, saw some picture of AR's with those and thought they looked pretty good.

I just bought the Harris mount today. It was easy to install and looks good. I also picked up the compression tool to remove the hand gaurd, the tool makes it very simple to do by yourself.

Scotch - did you have to remove the inner heat shield to install it, or were you able to mount it right over the heat shield?

No, I just removed the hand gaurd. You will see how to screw it on the lower half of the hand gaurd. I removed the sling swivel stud and clipped my bi pod on.

Well my bipod came in today and I must say it was a breeze mounting the swivel adapter to the fore guard -

Used this -

2-HB2 - Harris Adapter for Hollow Forends

.....And fit like a glove in the heat shield recess, nothing had to be altered. The whole unit is tight as a drum and steady as a rock.....








So tomorrow it's off to the range to give it a try and make some noise

And on it's way is a 6X magnifier from primary Arms to mount behind the Eotech red dot........
