Heard a rumor that S&W is no longer making the M&P15 chambered in 5.45x39mm
Is this true?
Went to the S&W website and it is not included within their M&P15 catalog.
Mistakenly ommitted or reality?
Wonder why they would discontinue it??

To my knowledge you still can. Its called the M&P 15R. The only reason that I can think that they discontinued it would be due to lack of demand. I'm sure you can find an upper for it online somewhere like impactguns.com or cheaperthandirt.com

Are these M&P15R's reliable? Do they cycle the 5.45x39mm round OK?
Wonder why there wasn't much demand for an AR-15 in this caliber that shoots very affordable and available ammo??
Oh, and thanks to the previous two members' posts. They were extremely helpful.

My best guess is that if you want affordable shooting, there are AR platforms chambered in .22lr such as the S&W M&P 15-22.

550 rds = $18.95

Roger'
I traded into an upper and based on the trade in it cost me abot $665.00, I picked up a S&W M&P Lower at the airforce base and put the lower end kit in it and yes it works just fine I just shot some golden bear ammo and I have 500 rounds of Tula on the way the Tula cost me $106.00 which included the ground shipping cost. If I include the total price that works out to .19 cents per round! I put a Vortex Strikefire red dot on it and the combo works very well together.

I saw quite a few on gunbroker last night. not very expensive either!!

Agreed, I got an upper a while back and pop it on to my other AR lower, the only thing is you need to make sure you use the heavier hammer spring for those steel Russian 5.45 primers. No need to put it in and take it out..it works just fine when you convert back to 5.56...The ammo is cheaper and frankly it has a slightly different ballistic effect at closer range as it was designed on the earlier 1 in 12 twist 5.56's for it's not just for target practice it's a hell of an assault round!

These were a TALO exclusive, so they were a special, limited, run.

While Smith & Wesson apparently did make a Talo exclusive model, they also made them earlier for themselves. I bought one in 2008. It's an excellent AR as far as I'm concerned - well over a thousand rounds of milsurp through mine with no issues. A little bit of extra clean up to take care of the corrosive primer residue is about all the difference there is between my M&P15R and any 5.56 chambered version. Oh, yeah - there is that thing about it costing half as much for ammo!!
