I'm the "cool" Dad!!!
My son had a friend over last night and today I dragged them away from the PS3 Call of Duty and took them to the range and let them shoot my sport. On the way home I over heard my sons friend tell him your dad is really cool.

Kudos to you sir. From a fellow "Cool Dad" it feels great to know your kids like you, maybe only until they turn 14 or so but what can you do? I am off to play pool with my 11 year old and going to stop to look at a new model for him to build. He likes cars but wants to look at doing an airplane or boat this time. My 14 year old is at the park playing basketball with his buddy, I wasn't invited since the girls will be there. Great job Dad.

Good job taking those boys to the range. The only way the shooting sports will continue is to get the youth involved. I've taken a couple of my son's friends with us, and they love to shoot the .22lr ARs my son and I have. Now that I have a Sport, next time they will get to shoot it and the SKS. Should be fun!

For many of us, I think, the "Cool Dad" status comes and goes.
From day one till about 13 years old, I was the smartest, coolest man in the world to both my daughters. From 13 until they were each out of college, I became a mean old man and "just didn't get it". Upon their graduations from college and getting jobs, I quickly became really smart again.
If you lose your "cool" status, don't worry, it probably just means you're doing your job and you'll become cool again someday.

I too enjoy being part of the cool dad club.
my son is 9, He's been shooting 1.5 moa at 100 yds
Since he was 6 with a scoped 22. I'm trying to find him a sport now.
Open sights he shoots my sport 25 meters with a 1/2 group result. Crazy how he knows war and battle concepts that I didn't learn untill I joined Combat Rescue. Dang that MW3 and Airborne ....

Taking the kids is the BEST thing you can do for them. And, taking their friends and showing them the proper basics will ensure that they have basic safety fundamentals and they will enjoy themselves much more, and they will much more likely be respectful shooters as they grow up.
Much, far too much is left for kids to either learn on their own, or from a teacher who might or might not take the time to do it right, be knowledgeable, or really care about the learning situation at hand.
The best education a person can get is from a mentor who has knowledge and the wisdom to impart a safe, fun, learning environment. I taught a lot of my sons' friends to shoot. Their families would never have done that for them- hunting, fishing, camping...... it's been my greatest pleasure.
Congrats on the good day at the range!

My parents were the dumbest people I knew when I was in high school. Then I spent 3 years in the Army, got married and we had a 1 year old daughter when I got home again. You can't believe how smart they got in 3 years!!!!!!!!!!!! Went thru the same thing with my 2 daughters and one is going thru it with her kids. What comes around goes around!
