So if you are reloading bullets for your sport, and you are using 5.56 primers, 5.56 brass, and your powder charge is CFE223 powder which was designed for the military and your charge matches the 5.56 velocities, but your bullets are V-max and Z-max 55gr Hornady Bullets wouldn't you still be reloading 5.56x45 bullets. Just asking.

Ok the only reloading data you get is for 223 remington. But if I am using 5.56 primers and 45 cases, I am using a powder that was developed for the 5.56 military bullets (CFE223) and 55 grain bullets (hornady V-Max and Z-Max) plus I am getting the same velocities as the 5.56x45 bullet, isnt it reasonable to say I am loading 5.56x45 instead of .223 remington?

Whatever you want to say.....but what is marked on the reloading dies? If you sized the case to .223 Rem, then that is what the brass is, regardless of the head stamp.

On the other hand, does it make a difference? If it is safe to shoot....and you have good accuracy with it, who cares what you call it?

I guess I don't see the fixation on what the finished round is called....either .223 Rem or 5.56x45. I don't separate my brass so it is whatever it is.

Since the external dimensions are the same he still could have 5.56 or .223 regardless of what the headstamp says. The primary difference between the two loads is the pressure they produce, but I don't believe one can assume 5.56 chamber pressures just because velocity is similar.

DEG that makes sense and I dont have a test fixture and the piezoelectric sensors to find out LOL....just rambling I guess..

In an earlier thread it was said that the 5.56 brass is thicker than the 223 brass and as such is of lower volume, if you load 223 loads in 5.56 brass it will produce higher pressures.

I'm also not quite sure what you're after, but both Ramshot and Accurate websites have data for NATO pressures which are significantly higher than .223.....if you rifle is marked for 5.56 NATO, as is my Sport.

all dies i've seen or used (redding, forster, wilson, hornaday, rcbs), are markd .223.
i've not seen 5.56 marked reloading dies, except lyman are marked .223Rem/5.56.

oneyeopn, don't matter primer, powder, brass, etc.. the difference is the pressures.

.223 Rem is max 50,000PSI
5.56 is max 62,000PSI

So toss in slightly more powder and you have 5.56...

I think those pressures are correct, I'm going off the top of my head, but I am 98% sure those are the correct pressures.

Most .223 reloading data I've seen that stat their pressures are around 48,000PSI as their max load. So if say 25gr of powder is 48K PSI, them you could probably do 26gr and be above max pressures for .223 but still in tolerance for 5.56

If I could find my cellphone I have some reloading data with pressures listed that I could give you. But I think my son happened to find it somewhere and was playing with it and lost it or put it in his toy box. LOL.

5.56 (NATO Spec) is 60,000

oneyeopn, Using the CFE223 powder, I think you are using 26.8gr on your 55gr bullets...
Here is some load data I found:

Bullet: 55 GR. SPR SP
Powder: CFE 223
OAL: 2.200"
Charge: 26.0gr
FPS: 3133
Pressure: 43,300 PSI

Same Bullet.. different charge:
Charge: 27.8gr
FPS: 3329
Pressure: 51,300 PSI
