Hey Gang,

Well, I'm back for more advise.
I'm wanting to put a red dot on my AR. Funds are limited,,,welcome to the USA. I'm looking at the Truglo units. My question is what do you guys think is better of these two units. And Thanks again for all the advise.

I've had experience with the second red dot style. Its very hard to see the reticle on a bright day on the second one. One of them would not hold zero at 100yards. $$ is tight for most so I understand why your trying to find a red dot for around $50. Here's what happened to me when I went down that road. I bought a sightmark red dot for $70. Then I spent about $60 in ammo trying to sight it in before realizing it wasn't holding zero.

EVERYONE will tell you the same thing on any forum. "You get what you pay for when it comes to optics"

I recommend running irons untill you have enough $$ for a proven sight. The cheapest quality red dot I know of is the Vortex strikefire red dot scope for $160. It's been reviewed a ton.

Primary Arms makes great budget red dots. I've used a bunch of them on different platforms. Also, the Bushnell TRS-25 is a great sight for the money.

I have a Millet SP-1 , it is like the first photo , this one is a 1 inch diameter sight and I have it mounted on a pistol. They make a 30 mm size also for rifles. The SP-1 is listed in Midway catalog for $98.00. Don't have catalog with me for price on other models but they are reasonable.
Have had it 3 or 4 years, easy to sight in , have never had to readjust it, 12 brightness settings ...have had no problems shooting in bright sun light. For less than $100.00 I am more than satisfied and want to get another for a model 64 S&W 38 spcl. I believe the older tube models don't have issues with bright sunlight like the ones in your 2 nd photo, but they are a bit bulkier. If size isn't an issue take a look at Millet.....

These are excellent suggestions. I also have this one from Millet that I picked up cheap at Academy. It has been a great optic for me, so far.

I have a barka red dot on my 15-22 and it has been awesome. I dont know how well it would hold center on a full AR however... I got it on Amazon for $100 and if anyone can vouch for it on a 5.56 I would certainly recommend it to you.

I have the Truglo 30mm red/green dot on mine. I recently got my M&P15 and haven't taken it to the range yet. (this weekend) Both colors have rheostat settings, dim to bright. Paid $56 for it on amazon.

I also have the TRS-25. It has worked very well for me. With a little over 1300 rounds thru my 15 OR, it has given me nary a problem. I used Blue Locktite on all the mounts, nothing has come loose and it has kept it's zero.

The best knock off red dot I have ever seen is the Vortex Strikefire.

Still...you'll never regret saving up longer and buying an Aimpoint.

Did you ever see the Daniel Defense torture test? They ended up torture testing the Aimpoint as well as the AR. It was amazing what that Aimpoint went through.

This is a rifle for self defense?
Botach often times has hard to beat deals on Aimpoint's.

Gunpacker I have the one on the right for my Rem. 870 SG. I also have the $120 (MSRP) one on my AR and it works great! I run and gun with it and it has held up plus it is accurate. I only use it for 100 yrds or less. If you are going to shoot at further distances I recommend a different sight system. It is 100% co-witnessed with my MBUS rear sight and A2 fronnt sight of my Sport. Hey for the money if it did break, you can replace it cheap enough! You won't be sorry. Buy what you can afford for now until you save for a better optic down the road.
