I recently purchased a S&W M&P 15 tactical and I was wondering if I got what I should have gotten. What I mean by this is that, when I went to the store (dick’s sporting goods) I asked the person at the gun department if the rifle came with a chromed lined bolt carrier (he said no), when I looked at the rifle it did not look like it had it chromed . He also told me that it did not come with a free floating barrel. He then told me that the rifle was in fact the M&p 15 tactical version. When I got home I looked up the rifle in the S&W website and it says that it does have a chromed line bolt carrier. If anyone has any idea what I might be missing (information wise) I would appreciate the help. Thanks
P.s I live in CA :(

I have the 2nd gen M&P 15T. I believe it does have a chrome lined BCG, but you have to tear down the BCG to see the chrome lining.

It does have a free floating barrel as well.

Does the model # on the box match the one from the S&W website, 811041 for the current 15T?

Edit, Oops, I missed that your were in CA. I think the CA version is 811048.

Is this what you expected to get > Model M&P15T - 10 Round, Fixed Magazine & Bullet Button (California compliant model) < if so then you need to go back to 'dick's' and tell them the product was mis-represented to you and they need to give you the correct model or your money back because the 15T is supposed to have a chrome bolt carrier and free floating hand guard. These are the specs for the M&P15T CA compliant model:

There are only five S&W M&P15 rifles that are California compliant, these are > M&P 15 CA complaint rifles < so what you got has got to be one of those - models 811062, 811039, 811040, 811038, 151009. However, the M&P 15T California compliant model is the 811039.

I didn't even know Dick's had the S&W M&P15 line, thought as close as they came was the Remington R-15 AR style varmint rifle? The M&P15 models don't appear on their web site do they? Our local Dick's here doesn't carry them.

the chrome lining is not going to look like bumper chrome, it is not a polished shiny chrome. It is a hard crosshatched (for sealing on the Bolts gas rings) cylinder. Great Rifle...enjoy!

You can't go wrong with either of the M&P T's...I liked them some much I bought one of each model.

Most of the time the folks behind the counter of sporting goods stores, and a lot of gun shops, don't know much about what they are selling, and instead of looking it up or saying "I don't know", they make up some BS just so they don't look stupid.

It looks like the 15T for CA should be 811039.

Dick's Sporting Goods DOES (maybe not all of them),sell the S&W M&P AR 15's. Dick's is a gigantic chain store and if a model isn't selling in one, they will ship it to another store that is reguardless of model or if it's compliant. SO,you need to be carefull and KNOW what you are looking for so you won't end up with a compliant model in a non compliant state. I doubt if they would sell an non-compliant model in a compliant state though. I know this for a fact. I have a compliant model (from who knows where) in a non-comliant state. Find this model 811064 and tell me where it's from and where it should be. It came with a different free float forend that doesn't disasemble like the manual says,a detachable 10 round mag (insted of the 30 round) and no forgrip. It's 5.56 with a 1in8 twist 5R melinite barrel. I called S&W CS and asked if and what was going on and gave him my serial number too. He couldn't find anything on that model number in their records, but said S&W does do special order runs for large chain stores like Dick's AND also showed my model does exist from the serial number he did have and it did come with a 10 round mag,no handgrip and had three ladders, but didn't quite understand about the different freefloat forend. So,all's good and I added the forgrip and it takes my P-mags. Born date was march 19th 2012 buy the way.

Maddmax...take a look at the 811039 California Compliant "T"....If it doesnt have the bullet button or the 10 round mag, it may be a converted one of these to become your rifle....I have searched high and low and this is the closest I can find with your forestock and everthing. the quadrail attaches like a LaRue with the screws going forward from right behind the delta ring. Thats as close as I can find. it isnt even one of their discontinued models. It matches the pic you sent me earlier even to the oblong holes in the front stock.

Yup,two hex screws on both sides. No bullet button and has a 10 round drop mag (10 rd could come in handy on my rest). I asked S&W about the bullet button model and he said no,"those" T's were made with the mag release button and 10 round drop mag but didn't understand the different forend being a 2012 model. Wonder (?) if they are going to that quadrail on the newer ones or just had parts to get rid of and used them on that particular "special" order model to keep them cheaper ? I had the S&W rep. stumped and that's rare in itself.

You are right. Just double checked S&W site and it's all the same except the bullet button. It's all I could find about compliant model too. It was also the first thing I checked looking at the weapon with that short 10 rounder. I had read that you could modify the compliant lower to take "normal" mags, but you had to do some grinding or drilling to make the lower work with "normal mags. That was the second thing I looked for was any modifacation signs in the lower. I also thought (being they only had two in stock),that "maybe" some one switched mags and took the 30's out for their own use ??? Does S&W make their own mags and mark them S&W M&P AR 15 on the bottom or side of a new AR like some other manufactures ? All my Rugar mags say Ruger on them. All my M&P hand guns are marked S&W M&P,same for my 1911 Colt,Highstandard and IMI on my UZI too. I prefer to stay with OEM on about everything I buy when I can, saves troubles down the road. Pmags work great and those are mag of choice for my AR's. This (10) almost looks like an after market. I do have a 20 & 30 after market for my RR,but it's an overall Pmag shooter too. The big thing is as long as it shoots as good as the best ones I've seen on here I'm still happy.

Thank you all for the information just picked up the rifle and I was pleased with it but now I have some new questions. The rifle has model M&P 15 and not M&P15T is this normal. And regarding the mag it does not say S&W or M&P instead it has “ASC New Britain ct”, I kind of thought it would come with a M&P mag or something.

Mine is the same way,"might" be normal, but was wondering the same thing. No M&P 15 T stamped on the side and my mag is the same ASC stamped. Is yours a 10 round too or larger ?

I believe and I could be wrong but all M&P15's say that on the side, I have yet to see a picture of another model saying something different, My nephews OR lower looks just like my lower. So I kinda figure that all the M&P15's say M&P15 on the side of the mag well. MOE's could be different but that I dont know.

Went over to the big city to the East of here and checked their Dick's Store compaired to the one South of here. They had a "T" model 811064 with the 30 rd PMag and handgrip... I'm happy with mine but would of liked the 30 PMag. Nice thing with the 10 round,it fits and drops out of my bench rest and I don't have to unclamp for a reload.

At which CA Dick's store did you buy your M&P15T? The one in Fresno only has hunting rifle and shotguns, no black rifles. Then again I have been there in a couple months. How much were they charging for it?

If youare asking me. I'm in the midwest.

Just picked up the 811064 from Dicks as well. I'm in Texas so not a bullet button state. Sold as the MP 15 tactical. No bullet button but came with a 10 rd mag.

I'm fine with that but wanting to know if I a pmag 5.56 30 rd will work. I think maddmax said it would but just wanting to make sure.

Pmags will work with it just fine. Strange that these quasi compliant guns are in Texas though...
