can we get some pics...I would be interested in the flash suppresor with brake and the sights. Chrome barrel you clean like any other barrel. Bore Snakes work great. Lube it like any other AR, if you do a search in the forum there was a thread that gave the instructions for lubing an AR, I just dont remember what it is called. Pics and then take it out and shoot it. Bushy's are not bad rifles, I actually am hard pressed to call any AR a bad rifle. Congrats. Oh and by the way, we are not gun snobs so come on in!!!

I think that when you buy a gun they ought to give you the dadgum bullets!!! Same thing with socks and underwear when you buy pants and shoes...and tires when you buy car...I could go on and on.

I'll get some pictures up soon. I know nothing about AR's I'll have to look up the post on lubing it up.. I downloaded the manual and printed it so that should help. Lot's more part's to it so I want to go over it before shooting it Ya Lot's more cleaning and lubing with it! What's the differences between 223 and 5.56 NATO ammo? It can take both. The guy that had it before me added a P mount front gas block and took off the org. front sight with fully inclosed gas line. The one that's on it now is a well defined pop up with matching rear sight and I can mount a light or something below it with the P Rail..I have been around hand guns all my life and I'll tell you this AR is like holding a new born baby for the first time.. You know, you want to get everything right but feel your doing everything wrong.. George

Guy at the shop said it was about 10 years old and was one of the good ones.. He said at the time some of the departments were trading in there Colts for Bushy's do to the accuracy. He said it was a $1600 rifle with the upgrades and it had been done right he said. He was asking $1000 I offered $800 he said he could not he said $900.. I said I would meet him at $850 he held firm but thinking about it for about a hour said he had to call his boss.. I told him no as I thought I had a better chance with him and told him that.. I said look.. I'll go to $875 and I really want it but will walk if he didn't feel he could or should make the deal with out asking his boss.. It still took him a half hour after closing time to makup his mind.. Ya he took $875.. I may have paied the upper price for this gun but it is set up nice and is very clean and looks to have a low round count.. To me it looks like it's worth the $875 we paid for it.. oh got him to throw in one box of 50 Fiocchi 223's. George

Was it 10 years ago when Bushmaster was sold to the Freedom Group? I know that the original owner and most if not all of the original workers of Bushmaster, now make AR15's under the name Windham Weaponry. They are even in the old Bushmaster factory. From what I hear, the same quality and all. Their AR's go for around $1000 msrp but last I saw dealer prices were closer to $800/$900, maybe a little more depending on the model.

As for the vintage Bushmaster, I can't say whether you got a deal or not. But I'd say you did a hell of a job making him come down in price Etc. In any case, I wouldn't give it a second thought. It sounds like you got a heck of a gun and what is more important is you being happy with it

I have two Bushmasters from that era - a 20" standard rifle and an M4(gery). They are both very accurate - better than me, and neither has given me reliability concerns. The only issues were related to some cheapo ammo and magazines.

You got a good one. Be sure you get good instructions on teardown and reassembly. Make sure you don't leave any parts out of the bolt-carrier assembly. It's simple enough, but different from most any other rifle. Manual of arms is different too and can be awkward at first. You'll get used to it, ok, probably addicted to it, eventually.

Yep Made in Windham Maine right on it! I wonder if they would let me look around in the factory. I would love that! G

Krogen, Ya looked over the manual I downloaded but didn't take the gun down yet other then pulling the back top pin to lower the upper.. In the manual it said not to leave out this one Bolt Cam pin because your rifle will fire but also will explode.. Just want to make sure that one pin is in there.. Though it looks well cared for I just can't bring myself to fire it yet at least till I'm sure that one CAM BAR PIN is in place.. G
I did run a few cleaning pacthes down the bore and lubed the last patch.. Lubed the bolt and trigger works.. wiped out clean! Gave the outside a good lube and wipe down too.. Looks great! G

You need to look up 5.56 and .223 ammo differences. Supposedly the 5.56 cases are a tad bit thicker and the chamber pressure is a bit higher. In all of my reloading books they give you the reloading info for .223 and some also do .223 service rifle. When I first got my Sport I had this hang up that some may remember about wanting to reload 5.56 rounds and trying to get reloading Data for those. I eventually came to the realization that I was spitting into a strong wind. I bought 1k rounds of 5.56x45 SM193 Federal Ammo and using a chronograph my reloads are running the same as the 5.56. As I am beginning to understand there are some minute physical characteristics and they are loaded with a primer that is harder to set off. It all is starting to seem like moot points as far as my reloading. But as I said if you do a search on the internet there is alot of information concerning the difference. I was given a box of 223 hunting rounds by Federal, they did not run as hot or as good as the 5.56 federals. Dont know why unless it has to do with bolt action 223's tend to have a way slower twist rate.

Got familiar with the take down of the AR. All parts are there and look to be in good shape very clean all and all just a tad of carbon on the bolt. Broke it down and cleaned it.. Ok no pictures yet sorry for the delay.. But as far as the Barrel brake goes It's a YHM found it on a web search, It has 3 inner chambers and a nasty narly outer surface.. It states this is a barrel brake not a flash suppressor..Same name pop up sights front and rear. Looks like they don't come cheap!.
Also Walmart has what looks ok to me but let me ask .. It's a red, greed dot scope. I think 40X only 46.99. What range would this be good for? I wear glasses and it seems to be eraser to see the hole sight in picture better looking through it and working with one dot seem like the way to go.. Is it worth getting.. Gives good details about it online in there store.. Worth getting? George

If you can give us a link to the scope we can help you out further, I have bought scopes at Wally World before and they turned out to be pretty good. But when it comes to optics it is better to stay with a brand with a warranty although I still use my WallyWorld scopes on some of my rifles. Because when I pull up walmart I see all sorts of scopes I will try to flesh it out. Links do help..

I have owned both brands and that same exact truglo, my probem with the truglo was the fact that the dot is 5moa. I had it on a Hi-Point 9mm carbine and it was just too big a dot. When I had to trade the Hi-Point for a riding lawnmower (I made out) I let it go with it. I think you will find the dot is too big for your bushy. I dont know what the different reticles are on the centrepoint but I have one of their scopes and for the money it has been a good scope for me. it is a 4-16x42 and I am trying to decide whether to put it on my Marlin 22 or a 3-9x42 Bushnell Banner that I have had for as just as many years. I would check out what the reticles are. Your rifle should be more accurate than the size of the reticle on the first one and if the CenterPoint is close to the same you will end up getting a bit frustrated with your lack of accuracy or anyway that was my experience...YMMV

I looked at the reticles....they appear to be 5moa also, there are some better, for your purpose, red dots around or maybe you might consider a holographic sight. I am going to send you a PM!!

Grover, Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you as I had some medical stuff to deal with, just getting older.. Thank you for your PM.. I'm Looking around with your suggestions.. Maybe something with a smaller dot or even crosshairs would be better.. I wish I could try some out first.. I where eyeglasses they are progressive type from reading through mid view to distance.. So not sure what will be easier on my eyes. Most shooting will be at 100yds or less but I would like to see the full capability of this BushMaster. I would like to be able to part the hair on a Nat so to speak.. Guess just the best sight with some decent eye relief that will do the job to the point of my not needing to upgrade it.. Where I shoot now I'm limited to 100yds but there may be other place I could find to shoot to extend that some.. Thank you for your help! George

Astigmatism: optical defect in which vision is blurred due to the inability of the optics of the eye to focus a point object into a sharp focused image on the retina.

George, no matter the dot size, be certain to sight through the scope and check for astigmatism affects before buying a red dot (the point object), or ask for a full return policy.

Okay, Bushmaster is now owned by the same folks who own DPMS. They bought out the name, and Windham created his new shop after moving on from Bushmaster.
It made sense, as the parts are all sourced from DPMS in the first place.
Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra. Same truck, different badge. I have a BM, and it has been a very good rifle. I have a DPMS; it's been a good rifle for the most part. (Non chromed barrel, it can get tight and needed a polishing job on the chamber to really clear ammo quickly and cleanly. The extractor wore down at around 5500-6500 rounds. But other than that, it is really accurate. The BM is a 308, and it is very accurate for my uses.

Still glad I got a older one in a 20" I'm guessing it's less then 10 years old and hardly shot.. I did a lot of reading and seen many Police departments that were issued Colt back a few years changed the Colt's out to BushMaster for accuracy and reliability factors.. At that time BushMaster was king.. Hope my AR is in that time zone.. Got some green tipped 5.56 NATO Federals for her dinning pleasure.. Didn't arrive yet.. Now looking at some 40 round CMMG mags for her Any good? Have to pick up a few other things like chamber brush.. Walmart by me is out so I'll get one with a butstock cleaning kit I would like to have for field use anyway. So much to think about.. Optics I know nothing about as I stated about my eyesight is there anything here that should fit my needs? I have a removable handle with a receiver flat rail on top. Something not pricey.URL AR-15 Scopes Thanks! George

You say Windham like it's a person..You said " He created a new shop after moving on From Bushmaster"
Windham is a place in the state of Maine Where the Factory is located!!

Cheapo magazines can be a pain. I don't care for the 40 rounders. If you stick with 30 or 20 round milspec magazines you shouldn't have any issues. Whenever I've gone with off-brands I haven't been happy. Poke around the net and find the names that contract to the government and buy those. Or just go to Brownell's and buy the magazines with their name on them.

Sir George this is a great thread to read about cleaning supplies and tips for the AR platform. Plus I always keep at least 3 chamber brushes on hand, they do wear out.

I couldn't say about those two mags, George. Never have used them.

Also, I note they're steel. Most of the mags I encounter are aluminum.

Take a look here:

Walmart by me is out so I'll get one with a butstock cleaning kit I would like to have for field use anyway. So much to think about.. Optics I know nothing about as I stated about my eyesight is there anything here that should fit my needs? I have a removable handle with a receiver flat rail on top. Something not pricey.URL AR-15 Scopes Thanks! George

You say Windham like it's a person..You said " He created a new shop after moving on From Bushmaster"
Windham is a place in the state of Maine Where the Factory is located!!
Yeah, I did. My bad Chairman/ CEO is Richard Dyke.
I suppose Windham is a good way to go; not many would be thrilled to have a 'Dyke's Weaponry' rifle!!!
