Was reading some forums and threads and read about 'staking' the castle nut.

I think I read the same thread. They were arguing something fierce about it. Was a fairly entertaining thread if memory serves me correct. I believe staking consisted of making a mark near a set screw that pushes material near the head of the screw. Ill c if I can find a picture. Might be way off base too.

When I replaced my castlenut I didn't stake it. And to this day its still tight.

They are just talking about stacking it, meaning bash it up a little so it doesnt back out later on. But if you want my opinion, blue lock tite (anti vibration) works just as good and it doesnt make ur weapon look so dinged up. Place a little dab of that blue on the threads and tighten her up. Guarantee you she isnt going to vibrate loose.

Dont make the mistake and put red lock tite on it. You'll be very upset if ever comes a time u need to remove that castle nut.

Okay, here is a picture of a Gas Key that has staked nuts on it. You will understand clearly what it means: Staked gas key.jpg

Take a look at these pics from a google search. To stake the castle nut, you are displacing some of the metal from the end plate to into a notch on the castle nut to insure that the castle nut does not back off unintentionally.

My M&P came with the castle nut staked. When I had the sling mount added, I had the armorer re-stake it. (I'm a chick....I pay people to do this stuff for me...LOL)

There are ways for a chick to get men to do these things for her, without shilling out a single buck............

Practice batting your eyes and smiling shyly. THAT's how a chick gets stuff done.;)

(Why am I telling you this???!!! It's like letting the cat out of the bag.)

thats worked on me for years....I have done so much for chicks....but never staked a castle nut!!!!LOL

Okay, so you have properly staked parts. How the hell do you get them apart again? Take a punch and try to back the deformed metal out of the way first?

You use the correct tool to remove and most of the time it has enough torque to undo the stake. Occasionally you have to unstake them but not normally. Its just there to keep vibrations from wiggling it loose. Honestly locktite will generally hold stronger but the stake is also a great way to visually check that everything is tight and operating correctly.
