I have a 20" Stainless Bull Barrel. I would like to take off 2" of length. Is this possible, and can a gunsmith do this in house? It is a little front heavy and was wondering if this would help. This AR 15 is my target rifle and don't think it would hurt in distance shooting. Your input is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

It can be done, but why mess with it for 2 inches? If it is a target rifle you will not lose much by going to 18 inches except your money. You will have a little better velocity out of the 20 and you could spend the money on ammo, accessories, or save and but another gun. I think this may be one of those times after you are done and have dumped a chunk of money into it you regret it later, but it is your gun.

I agree. It's not worth messing with two inches and not gaining anything good out of it. You won't be loosing much weight, just loosing the money doing it and regret it later. I'm going 4 extra (to 24") on my next build for a bit more added umph.

Hacksaw and a 12 pack of Miller Lite.:D

Go to town!!!

If lowering the front end weight is the issue, I'd get the front end fluted instead. It keeps the length for the distance shooting, and can take a good bit more weight off the front than pulling 2" off.

Fluting is a great idea. Don't know how much weight would be removed. I believe that I will buy a new upper and that way I am good all the way around. (Target and hunting). Thanks all for the feedback.

I think thats the way to go. You could always build another lower later (hopefully) and have 2 guns.
