Do you remove your Aimpoint/Eotech when cleaning?

I recently got my Larue QD mount for my Aimpoint Pro and as much good as I've read about it being almost foolproof with returning to zero once removed and reinstalled I'm still skeptical.

If you have a Larue mount - or other high quality mount - do you remove it when cleaning your AR?

Also - my dad just put a Eotech EXPS2-0 on his Sig M400 and I'm really digging it too - in fact - I think I might be a little bit jealous of the thing vs. my Aimpoint Pro (but that's another thread I suppose). Can anyone with a EXPS2-0 comment on how well it returns to zero when removed?

I think I'm going to clean both guns tonight and would like some input.

Just curious. Thanks!

My eotech 517 returns almost perfectly to zero using the standard mounts it came with. But I don't remove it to clean my rifle. I believe on the spec sheet it says repeatable to 1moa or something of the nature.

I have a EOTech XPS2 mounted on my AR. If I just do a quick wipe down I leave it mounted. If I am going to use any solvents, sprays, etc. I remove it from the rail. Mine doesn't have the QD mount, but when I reinstall it I have never had to re-zero it. The trick is to re-mount it in exactly in the same spot on the rail. I have the rail number written on a label on the bottom of the sight for quick reference.

My XPS2 also has an exact co-witness with my BUIS so after remounting I can check to see if the red dot is sitting on top of the front post where it should be.

QD mounts

I have an EO 552,an aimpoint T-1, an ACOG, and a Leupold CQB. all with QD throw lever mounts.....I swap them on an off from whatever AR platform I am using at the time....they maintain zero.....you should have no prob removing and remounting.

As long as I put my aimpoint on the same T rail it maintains its zero perfectly.

You probably don't want to hear from me since I don't have "a Larue mount - or other high quality mount" but for what it's worth I have a NcStar 4x32 scope and a sight mark reflex sight, both attach with a QD mount. I swap them back and forth depending on what kind of shooting I'm doing and for cleaning and they never lose zero.

I understand being skeptical but I'm sure you have nothing to worry about with your pricey mount and optics if my much cheaper ones keep their zero.

The beauty is you actually own the equipment in question and you can test it out the old fashioned way, get some first hand experience. Let us know if the sights and mounts in question hold true after removal for cleaning, supposing you do remove them for cleaning

I will report back on holding zero once I do remove and reinstall.

I hope I didn't offend you with my wording - but I also own a Sightmark Reflex QD as well as a Primary Arms Micro Dot in a UTG mount - and neither one hold zero worth a darn once removed. That was why I worded my post the way I did - I certainly meant no offense - but my experience with less expensive optics/mounts has not been great.

Take care.

No offense taken, Bill. Just giving you a hard time :). I get it though, you've had experience with the cheaper mounts and are just wondering if people are having better luck with the more expensive mounts. I hope everything works out for you.

When you say cleaning, are you talking about after a day of dragging it through the mud in a tactical course? If not I can't see why one would remove the optics for cleaning after a day at the range. I usually just clean the inside and then wipe the outside with a cloth after the cleaning is done to remove my paw prints (if I think about it).

nope

That said, my rifles rarely get a real workout (as a service rifle would) If I believed that grunge had built up sufficiently in the mount/rail I would have no problem with removing it to clean.

I use Eotech, Aimporint M68, and ACOG, none have problems returning to zero if placed back in same rail.

I have never removed my PRO when cleaning my rifle. The only thing I would be worried about is getting some CLP on the lenses but the covers pretty much do a good job of keeping everything out when they are snapped shut.

I use an AimPoint PRO with the AimPoint mount that came with the optic. While I do not normally remove it from the upper rail when cleaning I have removed it to try on my son's Sport then returned it to my rifle (not changing settings) without the point of impace changing as far as I can notice.

Cheers,
W-W
