I just received my purchase of the M&P 15 300 Whisper/AAC Blackout rifle in melonite finish from my local gun shop yesterday. The primary use for this rifle is for hog hunting in Florida and maybe completion. I was wondering if anyone has purchased this rifle and what their pros and con are. I already put a nice 3-9x42 Redfield Battlezone scope on it and plan to put other upgrades on the rifle when cash comes a flowing. :)

M&P15X, M&P15 300 Blackout/Whisper, M&P Shield 40

By the way, welcome to the forum. I think you enjoy the forum and find that most all the members are helpful as can be.

Mine was purchased for deer last year, but I didn't see a shootable buck so did not drop the hammer. A couple of the bonafide hog hunters will be along soon with first hand information, but my reading indicates that bullet selection will be important for hogs, and keeping to under 200 yards.

Good luck.

I have a 300 that I load supersonic only and have no problem finding components. It is used for hogs and plinking and is as much or more fun than my 223 AR's. I like stuffing pulled 147 gr FMJ bullets into that little case and then finding that it is formidable on targets of my choice out to 100-150 yards, beyond that I do not have a backstop to retain the shots. I am not shooting MOA but am having fun with the cartridge.

This will probably get me banned, but I just can't let this go...
...as hard as Obama saying no to a vacation.

I found that mine cycles rem 220 & hornady 208 with or without the can. It was a little picky in the beginning but after 100 rds, it runs both the sub and supersonic with out problems. Initial accuracy was a little over MOA, but it was not broke in yet. It will easily do minute of pig/deer @ 300 yds with practice. PRO only, no con yet. Be Safe,

Here is mine with Trijicon Accupoint and AAC 762SDN6. The only issue I had was with Magpul mags and subsonic ammo, ejected fine, but it wouldn't feed fresh round. Supersonic ammo did not have issue. Also corrected issue by not using Magpul mags. I think it had to do with Magpul mags not letting enough back pressure gasses past the edge of the mag and the mag well. I use another poly mag and USGI mags with no issues. I do like Magpul Poly Mags, just not for suppressing.

Pro = Works with an AR15 lower/bolt/mags. Suppression is very quiet.
Con = Heavy bullet for such a small case. Ammo is expensive and hard to find (unless u reload).

AR10 works just as well.

I have an LR 308 and there is no way to compare the 308 rifle and the 300 short of them using the same bullet in some cases. The 300 is a light, quick pointing, short range, easy shooting rifle. The 308 is a great deal more powerful, longer range and not as compact, both are great shooters in their own realm.

Thanks to everyone that responded

I want thank everyone the responded to my post. I really love this rifle and currently experimenting with different brands of blackout ammunition to best suit me for use in hunting hogs. If any of you have a preferred brand, grain, or reload your blackout bullets. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciate.

Updates on my rifle

Here are the upgrades had installed on my rifle, which included the Double Star skeleton rifle stock with a Brownell's A2 buffer tube kit, UTG 15 inch Model MTU019SS free float rail with a low profile gas block, Strike Industries dust cover, and BCM Mod 3 charging handle. Future installs will include adding a different flashhider, adding a Magpul afg2 foregrip, and Timney trigger.

Thanks to all

I haven't been on the site for awhile do to work schedule. I just want to thank everyone that responded and gave their inputs on this rifle caliber and also welcoming me to this forum site. I'll try to get back and use the valuable information that the site members provide for future endeavors out at the range and in the wilderness.

Redfish, I take it you and the 300 have not made the hog hunt as yet, I just completed a month with my best buddy in Texas. We hunted his properties many times taking six small hogs but most were quite elusive. I took my AR in 300 Blackout but when I got there my bud gave me an AAC Handi Rifle, mounted a Nikon AR 223 3x scope and carried that little bugger the whole time. Finally encountered a monster (at least he was the biggest I had seen) 350 pound boar at sixty yards, one 125 gr Sierra TNT and he was down.
I load the cartridge and for plinking use pulled 147 gr FMJ bullets, I can load a bucket of these cheaper than my .223's as they use 1/3 less powder. Also I load only supersonic with H110 or W 296 which is becoming more available all the time. This is a fun cartridge and I go through many hundreds each month. There is not a soda can nearby that is safe from my .223's or Blackout's.
Needless to say that little Handi Rifle came home with me and hopefully will take more Texas hogs in the future but when you hit seventy every day starts with "if I am still vertical".

I have been using a nikon P-300 BLK 2-7 for a few months. Glass is OK, adjustments are repeatable, but the circles are to thick for any precision use. The circles obscure to much of smaller targets, but out to 250 yds it is easily minute of deer/hog. Be Safe,

Taking it out this weekend!

Ibmikey,

No haven't been in the woods as of yet with it, hopefully this weekend with my buddy's. As for what grain works for this rifle, that would be your favorite as you said 125 grain. I found that this works really consistent with this grain in .5 to less than and inch groups. As far as the rifles been only fired at the rifle range and your right it is fun!!! I really like it more than my 5.56. As for reloading goes I have be doing my research and have been acquiring reloading equipment as I save money here an there. Thanks for asking.

I hope everyone had excellent holiday. Some updates on what's going with my M&P 15 Blackout\Whisper rifle. I've installed a Geissele trigger and a Dave Tubbs flat wire recoil buffer spring. What a world of difference in the rifle in accuracy. I'm shooting 1 inch MOA's out at 100 yards with 147 grain full metal jacket bullets. I'm really impressed with this cartiage and can't wait to start reloading my own to experiment with different powders and weight bullets. To all have a awesome 2015 shooting experience.
