Ok everyone I just recently purchased my new MP-15 Sport (5.56) so to say the least I'm a beginner to ARs so take it easy on me. I am looking to add a fore-grip, sling and scope. My question is what all do I need and are there any brands to go with or stay away from. All advice is appreciated.

I will be watching your thread also. I have just purchased a new M&P 15 Sport myself.

I looked at a coupe nice scopes today, but I am in no rush to purchase anything just yet. I am not sure if I want one of the ones that go red or green dot, or if I want a traditional lined scope or a traditional lined scope that illuminates in red or green.

Man there is a lot out there and I foresee myself spending a lot of money on this rifle. lol

What I recently bought or have on order for my new M&P15 Sport...

Case (soft case with M&P logo) $40
Mags (more MOE gen2 pmags) $12 each
Optic (Bushnell TRS-25) $90 with riser
Sling (Red Rock 2 point) $8
Handguard (DS Arms M4 insulated) $13
And then spent $200 on ammo.

Of course, I didn't want to break the bank on a $560 rifle. So I was thrifty when buying stuff for it. But I feel the stuff I bought was money well spent. And overall happy with the rifle.

Solid purchases R1....I've only purchased a soft case($30), a LMT carry handle ($50), and ammo. I like the look of the carry handle, and enjoy using irons, but if I do put optics on it, I have a leupold vx-1 1-4x20 that will fit nicely to it.

And as far as brands, just avoid any companies associated with airsoft. And buy from a reputable dealer.

Go view the picture thread. You can see what some of us have done to get ideas. A few tips:

1. Buy Magpul accessories from an authorized Magpul dealer. It has been my frustrating experience that ordering Magpul gear online from sources other than Brownells or Midway is a crapshoot. Do not buy Magpul gear from Ebay or Amazon. Most of the time, you'll get a counterfeit item. If the price is too good to be true, it's time to turn on the B S detector.

2. The best budget red dot optics come form Primary Arms. Other than that, good luck. Again, I learned this the hard and expensive way.

3. Telescopic sight = Nikon. Well known brand. They work well.

Search the pic thread for my rifle. You'll see that I'm one of the idiots who changed everything on his rifle. I've done worthwhile mods and completely ineffective expensive mods.

Welcome to the forum. This is exceptional advice, and JaPes has a whole lot of company in the "idiot that changed everything" department. If you look close enough in the picture thread, you'll find tons of Sports that don't look like Sports. Search some of the threads here, there are plenty of them about dressing up the Sport, as it is the Barbie of ARs. ;)

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

I have two slings now. A Magpul MS1 and a knockoff Magpul MS3. Get the MS1. It's a little more expensive, but can be easily configured for what you want.

I'm not going to try to talk you out of buying off Ebay, but be careful. Magpul stuff is high quality and the price shows it. A Magpul sling for $20 is either a fake or used. There are many good sellers out there, but you won't end up saving a whole lot on the price anyway.

Optics are a pet peeve of mine. Too often guys get scopes that are just OK by trying to save a few dollars. Buy once, cry once I say. Don't skimp on the optic. As long as I'm on optics, what do you want to accomplish with it? Without knowing that any suggestion we could make is useless.

John, you're not alone here. We've all done this or will at some time. It is my genuine hope that we've saved many folks a bunch of money by posting our adventures here.

I would take all the money you are looking at spending on accessories and buy ammo. Once you have run a case through the rifle, you will then know more of what you "need". A run and gun type shooter, or 3 gun competitor has different needs than someone who wants to make little groups by sitting at a bench and shooting slowly.

Get to know others and see how their rifles are set up. Shoot them before spending money on accessories based on looks. Just my opinion....

Everything I own. ;)

Magpul MOE everything, except for the buttstock, get the CTR.
Primary Arms or Vortex for optics (best warranty in the game).

If it were my only optic, I would probably opt for a red dot only, with co-witness to irons... and I'm one of those insists a firearm have irons.

Cypher offers good advice. Shoot the rifle, talk to other guys about their ARs at the range, and get a general idea of what you want from your rifle.

For an optic it helps to make some general priorities.
Battle worthy or range worthy?
Fast target acquisition or precision shooting?
Budget

Absent the above priorities, it's pretty difficult to start offering advice on what optic might be a good fit.

[not to highjack thread, but.....] How about:

1. Target shooting at the range 100 yards

2. Paper target acquisition only :) :) :)

3. under $500

Would like a little magnification, with just the iron sights at 100 yards couldn't see much other than the white of the paper. I don't wear glasses and have ~20/20 vision at distance.

SW shooter,

I just bought the Bushnell 1-4x 24mm Throw Down PCL. It appears to be good quality and it fits your budget. If you want to shoot farther than 100 yards, after you have zeroed it at 100 yards, you just put the second line on the reticle on the center of the target for 200 yards, the third line for 300 yards, etc. The throw lever is a quick way to go from 1x to 4x. Here is the Bushnell on it.

Since you're new to the AR platform, it's best to shoot it first before going all mall ninja on it...

The Bushnell TRS-25 red dot has a plethora of great reviews for a bargain RDS...

If the pupose is precision shooting at paper from the bench, there is no reason to go under 12x. Low magnification, like 1-4x, is good for wider field of view, fast target acquisition and shooting off hand. None of that applies to bench shooting.

I'd probably look for a $300 scope 4-12x or even a fixed scope with simple crosshairs that are thin. I bought a fixed 16x for bench shooting with my Savage. Perfect for 100yds. Just sitting at the bench... magnification is your friend.

I got the Nikon P-223 and absolutely love it! I also got a cheap optic at first and learned my lesson. Cry once as they say. (The other one I considered was the Redfield Revolution).

One thing, I think everyone will agree on.

New handguard/heatshield. What's currently on there, is only a handguard. It will get warm.

Now, need to just decide what/which you want... after you shoot your gun a bit. I knew the things I wanted, before I ever bought mine... not everything was perfect. I'm still debating the front end (most the grip profile).

And there's a LOT of good optics, out there. Get a feel for what you want first and its purpose (the gun).

This is awesome guys. Thank you all for the advice I'm glad to find people who are willing to help others.
