Just bought the new SW MP15 Sport II. For some reason, the dust cover will not close.

This is my first AR so maybe I am not doing something right.

It appears that when you push it to shut, the spring loaded pin should go down and it should clip in place. It doesn't. It just hits the mouth of the opening and won't close.

I used my thumbnail and was able to push down the pin and get it to lock in place one but only the one time,( mainly due to my nails being pretty short) So I know it will work.

It seems to me that maybe the pin needs filed a bit to allow it to be depressed easier when it hits the indented part of the mouth??

My mid moe was like this when I got it. I put some oil on the pin and used the edge of a blade to get the pin started and then applied pressure to get it to close. After repeating this many times it got easier and works normally now. It was a pia at first.

I wouldn't file the pin. The edge that the pin contacts is worn on mine now. That would be the place to file a little if so inclined.

I've had a few stubborn dust covers, it really won't take much for them to wear in. Just keep opening and closing it, working the detent.
I wouldn't do any filing as the already round surface will wear best, putting a flat on it will give it more work to wear smoothly.

thanks. I've tried oiling and closing it but I can't even force it. (I can use a knife though)

I may have to get a file and file down the edge a bit.

I am more inclined to file the pin though just because that can be replaced, whereas filing the edge is pretty permanent!

It certainly seems like the pin is quite a bit too long to go even go down regardless of how much it or the edge was worn. It is considerably longer.

I may take it to my local gun shop.

There might be some grit or a bur in the detent hole that the pin rides in. In know some lever gun owners have run into that problem with the pin in the lever. I never looked the dust cover close enough to determine if that pin can be removed and the hole cleaned or not.

I got it. Got a knife and rubbed on the pin while watching a bb game....eventually used a file and filed a bit off. Thanks for the help. It is working just fine now.
