About a month ago . . .

Wow that really sucks! Like you, I've found that I don't fall down as well as I used to. Well, I can fall but getting back up needs some planning and thought!

I've broken ribs in the past, it was the constant pain that got me. Other bones you can stay off of but your ribs are constantly moving! Back in the day they taught us to bind around the thorax to help stabilize the bones.. I can't say that's the current practice though.

Prayers for a speedy recovery!

...jacket and had my gloved hands inside my jacket pockets...

Big mistake right there. You could have been killed, or worse yet, resigned to wearing a diaper and sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of your life.

Keep your hands out of your pockets in cold weather. It doesn't matter if your hands get cold, keep them out of your pockets unless you are sitting.

I fell (inside the house) and broke a rib many years ago. I couldn't believe how bad it hurt, or how long it took to recover. As long as there is no internal damage, all you can do is rest and wait for it to heal. It took about 6 months for my broken rib to heal.

edit to add; Ditto what the others said about any doctor recommend follow-up appointments.

^^^ Don't I know it ^^^

Before I even hit the ground I knew having my hands in my pockets was a bad thing.

***********

I appreciate all the prayers and well wishes. Right now my biggest fantasy is 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. :)

You’re a good man Faulkner. You don’t deserve the pain you’re going through.

I remember as a kid, my dad broke every rib on his right side in a boating accident.

My dad was a big man. It was all I could do to help him out of bed when he had to go. My dad was a man’s man and could tolerate a lot of pain.

The only thing that I can remember bringing tears to his eyes were the ribs and kidney stones.

Hoping you heal fast ! Something along the same lines happened to me . Having been through 3 back operations , it doesn't take much to tweak my back . I was cleaning out the pool skimmer and when I went to get up I felt it , I couldn't move . My constant helper , Nebula , or Nebbie , was by my side . She knew something was wrong , so off she went . Luckily the sliding porch door was open , so she went to get Sharon . My daughter and Sharon got me up and inside to bed .

When this happens , Nebbie jumps up and will not leave unless it's to go out to the bathroom . Sharon tells people if I stop too fast , Nebbie will end up in my a** . But there's nothing like having a dog that's in touch with you , especially when they look you in the eyes and you see their love for you .

Glad you're on the mend, Faulkner.

Reminds of the old saying, "no good deed goes unpunished." Of course we know it's not true, but it seems like Satan hates folks who do good for others and tries to put them out of commission.

I can sympathize with your pain. I, too, had to sleep in a chair for several weeks after my car accident and broken sternum. I imagine the pain is pretty similar, and it sucks.

Well Faulkner

I removed my "LIKE" only because I too am not wanting to applaud anyone's misfortune. I do like your helping your neighbor and your wife's obeying your orders to return to the safety of the inside and I truly admire the way you can tell a story and make it so interesting. Only thing I could think of is to quote TX-Dennis: "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished"! Hoping for your speedy recovery.

Finally got to read this thread.
I know what happened every split second of that fall.
I did it to myself, six months ago !

Saw the Blue sky, felt the crash, the loss of wind and in a little bit
how the body started telling me that I messed up.
I also messed up the left leg and knee area on the bricks or a old dry bushh, on the way down, that took two layers of skin off, through my jeans, that were not ripped.

Hope the pain pills are helping and you will get a good night sleep soon
and be able to take a deep breath and not be affraid of a cough or sneeze that is on the way.

Cracked ribs are a real pain, for the young or old !!

I first learned that in a high school footbal game, on a "tackle trap" play,
getting a helmet, square in the chest.

Hang in there neighbor.

Heal fast brother! Could have been worse!

Quigley just twisted his left front paw. We had to take a break from our normal daybreak romp-n-stomp. I really didn't realize it but for the last six-plus years he has averaged over five-miles per day on our search drills. He has never missed a day until yesterday.

That's quite a record. It made me count my blessings and not to take the good days for granted.

Like you, I've been laid up twice. Both times a broken clavicle. Had to sleep strapped and sitting-up for three months. Hang in there and keep the faith!

Quigley says hi.

Wow, I hope Quigley is on the mend! Daisy says hi.

As I get older, I find myself becoming more and more careful of my footing during all of my daily activities. Probability of taking a fall which could cause permanent disability is too high. In my case, also because I suffer some level of foot neuropathy. I also always wear rubber soled shoes for better traction in my house as it has hardwood floors and no carpeting. Walking barefoot or in socks presents too much of a fall risk.

Good that you are a tough old goat. I had cracked ribs from High School football, it sucked. But, as we say, it could have been worse. Like breaking your arm too. Prayers for you, hope it gets better fast.

Prayers as well, but it could have been much worse than a broken arm.

I have known 2 people who slipped and fell on ice and cracked their skull.

It didn't end well for one, and the other still suffers from it.

Hope you heal up quickly.

Ya know, these working dogs are so smart. He self managed and refused to do much of anything. He made himself stay in his bed for two days.

I figured Monday we would drop by the vet and x-ray his paw. Come Monday morning he was up and begging to go on a run. We did and he is fine. He averaged about 5 miles each morning this week.

My dad used to tell me regarding a dog in the field "He's smarter than you are, son."

Worth repeating, for those few folks who didn't already know it. When walking, I don't leave the house without work gloves with temperatures under 30 degrees Fahrenheit, partly for the luxury of warm hands outside my pockets, but also to protect my hands on contact with the street.
