Wow that really sucks! Like you, I've found that I don't fall down as well as I used to. Well, I can fall but getting back up needs some planning and thought!
I've broken ribs in the past, it was the constant pain that got me. Other bones you can stay off of but your ribs are constantly moving! Back in the day they taught us to bind around the thorax to help stabilize the bones.. I can't say that's the current practice though.
