My stepdaughter who I raised since she was not quite two, called us after being estranged from us for some time. She wanted to tell us that she had met a man and that she was pregnant and was going to leave her husband to marry this guy. At that point in my relationship with my daughter where I was completely fed up with her behavior, so I told my wife, that I was happy that she, my wife, was going to have a grandchild. I was not going to take part. For the entire pregnancy, I maintained that stance, to the point when asked what the new baby should call me, I replied, "How about Uncle Bob?" to which Mrs Raljr1 said, "How about ***hole?"

Sophia was born June 25, 2005, and Mrs went up to Maryland to be with her daughter, my son and I went up later. When Sophia was put into my arms, she looked me in the eye as if to say, "You think you're not gonna love me, big guy? We'll see." As it turned out, I loved that child with all my being, and if I was in the room, no one else mattered to her, she was Pappy's girl.

On this day in 2007, she was taken from us. She got tangled in a vertical blind chain and strangled to death. She would be turning 20 in 9 days. I may have been given that gift so that I'd learn from it. The lesson I am to learn from her being taken, I may have to wait for heaven before I find out.
