M&P sport trigger upgrade options

I’m picking up a new M&P 15 sport 2 today. I’m wondering what options exist for a trigger upgrade. I have another M&P sport that I installed the JP springs in, polished the sear/hammer. That trigger is “OK” but I think I’d like something a little better for this rifle. What is the next step up from the “poor man’s” spring job? I’d like the trigger to be 2.5-3# pull. Would like to avoid spending huge $ on this, the rifle itself only cost me $500! :D

I use a Rock River 2 stage trigger from AR15Sales in all my Ar's. They are a low cost trigger with a clean 4 pound pull. The last one I bought was $99 dollars with free shipping if I remember correctly.

The Enhanced polished fire control group from PSA is probably the most economical way to go. It won't lighten the pull very much, but it will smooth it out.

For about $20 more, you can go with the ALG Defense (QMS) which does about the same thing.

Quality Mil-Spec Trigger (QMS)

To get to the 3lb pull without spending a ton of money, you may have to go with the JP Enterprises trigger group and their reduced power spring set for about $114.

You want to stick with a single stage? There are way too many options to list, but I see @Bozz10mm already suggested an ALG Defense trigger. Great bang for the buck.

I've got RRA 2 stage match triggers in three of my AR's. Another AR has a stock trigger that breaks like a glass rod a 6lbs. It's amazing what kind of accuracy you can get with a good break even if the break is heavy.

This might not hit your budget objective - but I put in a Geissele SSA-E and it is WONDERFUL. It was on the order of $220.

I'd make the case - since you only spent $500 on the rifle - that that *justifies* spending the money to get a great trigger. (If the trigger you want happens to be more than what you're currently budgeting.) :D

I didnt realize how my new trigger would effect my shooting. Dropped in a Timney Trigger (4 lbs pull) and the feel is soooo different. Made a huge difference ... this is my 1st group after the new Trigger.

Spending the extra $ on a trigger is definitively worth it

I agree. A new trigger is an upgrade that once you do you'll never want to shoot milspec again.

General thoughts

2-3lb triggers are good for bench shooting but not much else. If it's a rifle that the shooter is going to be holding in hand beyond toting the rifle from the trunk of a car to the shooting bench, something closer to 4lb might be worth considering.

Whether it's a $500 Sport or $1,500 Daniel Defense makes no difference to the trigger finger. The $500 Sport is as worthy of the best trigger as any other rifle.

Trigger is a most important upgrade. Buying a trigger because it's cheap is money unwisely saved IMO. Shooting costs are too great to waste ammo on a trigger that isn't on the top of your need and want list. It's just the wrong place to compromise.

Everyone has their own budget, so it is what it is. But I think $200 triggers from Geissele and Wilson Combat are worth considering.

Be careful what you ask and wish for around these parts. The convincing arguments presented by Phil, Kadonny, Senior Chief, REM 3200 and others are, well, convincing. ;)

I'm listening. Anyone using the geissele g2s? I'm considering this and the jp Enterprises competition trigger group.

Well, the G2S is basically a cheaper SSA. I don't have a G2S, but I do have an SSA and love it. Awesome trigger, so my guess is you'd fall in love with it.

The $149.00 CMC 3.5 drop in trigger went in my Sport.
Big difference in the accuracy dept. Im very satisfied with it.
3.5#s works great for me.

Well... those who bought an AR to save money might want to reexamine their savings plan strategy. :D

With the Primary Arms 25% off Geissele sale that's on at the moment it's hard to beat a G2S at like $125 if you want a 2-stage, I have an SD-E and I love it, the G2S is cheaper but still has great reviews, like the other guy said it's basically an SSA without the fancy laser etching. Regardless, you can't go wrong with any Geissele trigger.

If you want a single stage my recommendation is the ALG Defence ACT trigger, the nickel boron finish not only looks cool it feels nice to the finger, add some JP Enhanced Reliability springs (I prefer these to the reduce power) and a Joe Bob grip trigger set-screw to remove the take-up and shorten the reset and you'll be hard pressed to find a better single stage trigger IMO.
