Red Dot for my Sport II
I am thinking about getting a Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot for my Sport II. Will I need a riser mount to clear the front sight, and if so, how high?

Take a look at the Lucid HD7 genIII. Great red dot and riser is built in. Perfect 1/3 on my Sport.

You will need a riser, but the height will depend on if you want absolute co-witness, or lower 1/3rd. For absolute, go with a .5" riser, and .88" for lower 1/3rd.

The TRS-25 is a solid choice if you don't want to mess with the upper end dots. Cyphertext laid out your choices, but I prefer the lower 1/3 as it gives you better vision when just using the dot.

Thanks Cyphertext. Just what I was looking for. I have watched the youtube videos on the advantages of each co-witness type. I think I will get one of each, and see which co-witness works for me.

The new version of the TRS 25 with the white lettering loses the dot in the upper 1/3 of the sight. This happens with the 4 o'clock emitter and the new 6 o'clock version. I called Bushnell and they admitted there were a lot of complaints but said consumers will have to live with it.

Customers don't have to live with Bushnell's problems. There are plenty of alternatives.

I have the sight on my Sport II with a 1/2" riser. Co-witness is absolute. I really wanted lower 1/3, but with the position of the emitter, the sight was blocked by the emitter.
Good Luck,
Rick

I have read comments from others that claim Bushnell had made some design changes, and apparently not good changes. It's too bad, it was an excellent red-dot.

If and when my Bushnell falls apart, I'll buy the Primary Arms Micro Dot. About the same price and has great reviews online!

Having owned several of the Bushnell TRS-25's for a while, I must say that I am not as big a fan of them now as I once was. While there is nothing wrong with them as an inexpensive (sub $100 for sight and base when you find them on sale) for range, plinking, or maybe casual hunting use, I would recommend something more substantial for serious use.
I have experienced more than a few blinking dots and disappearing dots despite good batteries and after changing batteries to fully trust the TRS-25. Additionally, with the way the emitter is situated, you are pretty much stuck with full co-witness with your iron sights as attempting a lower 1/3 co-witness with them is kind of impractical.
Having said this about them, I can say that they have held their zero well, whether on 5.56/.223, 7.62x39, 300 BO, 5.45x39, and .22LR, which I have not experienced with other sub $100 red dots, which I have seen self-destruct in as few as 5 rounds.

The Bushnell TRS-25 and Primary Arms MicroDot are pretty much the standard for non-duty red dots on a budget.
Aimpoint is the standard for duty capable red dots.

Agreed. F.Y.I. I fought Phil on this for a few years.
The other thing I fought Phil on was the usefulness of a dot + magnifier. What did I do, I bought an EoTech and a EoTech Magnifier. The government allegations leveled against EoTech's claim of warranty of use is what ended my fight with Phil over Aimpoint being the standard for duty capable optics. My experience with the magnifier (now a $300+ paperweight) is what brought me around to the opinion:
If you need magnification, buy a scope not a dot.

I am very pleased with my Vortex Sparc 2 as well, really as much as my Aimpoint, which costs an arm and a leg. The great thing is that it comes with all the mounts you need for either dot position.

I just picked up a vortex Sparc AR and am really liking it so far. Ya, I wish the battery life was longer but I really like the fact it takes a AAA battery. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again!

eotech EXPS3-2 for my m&p15 sport 2
I'm doing a little research (110% new to the whole rifle game so absolutely know nothing about everything) and my mind is made up about getting an EOTech red dot sight. I am just trying to figure out which one would be the best fit for my rifle. Its between the eotech EXPS3-2 and the EOTech XPS2-0. I want to make sure that it is above my A2 front sight. Comments.... anddd GO

My 1st TRS 25 lasted 150 rounds on a 9 mm carbine before the rheostat fell off while firing, hanging by the power wire. Returned it, but the next one was the white lettered one but still with a 4 o'clock emitter. It will 1/3 co-witness, but loses the dot in the top 1/3 of the sight like the new 6 o'clock emitter does. They took a good budget sight and turned it into junk to save money. As soon as people figure it out, sales will plummet and Bushnell will have lost a good seller.

Aside from EOTech's inherent defects, most notably the inability to seal out moisture, I don't care for the basic operation.
Achille's heal is short battery life.
Because of short battery life EOTech incorporates an auto-shutoff.
Because of the auto-shutoff the operator has to fiddle with buttons to get the thing to work.
The system seems to me less than well suited for battle/duty/SD.
Magnifiers? I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone at the club bring a magnifier mounted to their AR more than once. If I wanted a magnifier I'd place a WTB ad. There's got to be a ton of them in AR parts boxes.

Just an FYI on EOTech, not an internet myth, but directly from EOTech themselves:

After the EOTech debacle, I sent mine (EXPS2-0 and 512) back for a refund. The money I got back paid for 2 new Aimpoint PRO's. Couldn't be happier!
