As a Noob AR owner of a Sort II I am curious about dry firing! I know on a striker fired pistol dry firing is OK but what about the Sport/AR's
Thanks

Since the action has to be worked in any case, I'd get some Snap-Caps just to be on the safe side.

Dry fire away.

The prohibition on dry fire is for rimfire firearms. On a rimfire firearm, the firing pin impacts the rim of the cartridge. The rim of the cartridge rests on the outside mouth of the chamber. Dry firing a rimfire firearm will dent the outside mouth of the chamber. Eventually the dent will become deep enough to cause ignition issues.

Center fire firearms are exactly what they are named. The primer is in the center of the cartridge. When you dry fire, the hammer hits the firing pin, the firing pin then impacts nothing but air. No damage, no problems.

Snap cap or no snap cap, that's your choice. Remember that the AR-15 is a sturdy firearm able to withstand more than most will ever put their rifles through.

Thank you all for you help! I thought I was fine but wanted to know for sure!:o I have been a revolver/Pistol shooter for years so I know alot of quirks(not all) about them.. Being New to Ars those are the answers I was looking for,and the only other rifle I have is a Ruger 10/22 so like I said I am a Noob:eek:
Thanks again

The 10/22 is one of the only exceptions to the "do not dry fire a .22lr" rule. The bolt has a block that prevents the firing pin from contacting the mouth of the chamber.

Being new and being cautious are good. Just keep in mind that an AR-15 is simple and rugged. It can handle more abuse than most owners would ever put one through. Take care of it. Maintain it. But don't baby it. Go out and shoot it. Almost everything on an AR-15 is a replaceable wear item.
