Mr. Guns N Gear - Grudging Good Review on the Sport II

I've been waiting for his review since his video showing how the handguard held up to heat from the 60 round drum. I really was pleasantly surprised at his review. He's a huge Colt fan, so I didn't have high expectations. His comments on the dust cover and forward assist, and why he never reviewed the original Sport, were mildly annoying. However, he really did end up liking that rifle. Makes me feel even better about my Sport II. I was surprised how hard he had to push to get his dust cover to snap in place. Mine isn't that hard at all to get in place. I really liked that he discussed the barrel. I've always wondered how it compared to other barrels.
 
My dust cover snaps in place with minimal effort, his must just be slightly off but I wouldn't think that is representative of these rifles in general. It's good to see him being honest about liking the rifle though seeing as he had thought it may not be so great going in.

I agree. It seemed like he was doing his best to knock the Sport II and justify his knocks. After the range tests, he realized its better than he thought and tried to be a little more open minded without admitting he was wrong going in. Yes, the Sport II is an entry level AR produced to meet a price point. That doesn't mean it's junk like he implied at times. I'll take mine and the 3-400 that I saved vs a Colt, and spend a good part of it on reloading supplies and the rest on some things for the wife.

I think his review is spot on. It is what it is. It is a budget rifle which has a fair amount of compromises within its build spec in order to meet a price point. Even with those facts it still performs well and if you are looking for a basic no frills shooter and you understand what you are getting then he recommends it. His comments about the trigger do not surprise me. I would guess it varies from rifle to rifle. Some being better some being worse.

I also agree with him that in a budget category the 2 rifles to look at are the Aero and the Sport II. Both can be had for right around $500 with sights ready to shoot right out of the box.

I personally like the spec of the Areo rifles better but that does not make the Sport II a bad choice. His take on it did not surprise me at all. The best group was shot with factory ammo that costs over $1 a shot! The rifle he has shot a nice group a little better than I expected but not too surprising with that ammo.

I just ordered a Sport II and have not shot it yet but think it will be a fun gun. The only thing I do not like is the 4140 barrel and the bolt carrier is not an M16 one, but I think it will be plenty good.

The only upgrades I plan on doing is getting the $85 magpul butt stock and a two piece UTG Pro Slim 15" drop in.
 
Mr Guns N Gear gave a honest & fair review of the Sport II. I was impressed with the accuracy.

Also, Nutnfancy gave a honest & fair review of the Sport. He also said the M&P Sport was a rifle that he would keep.
 
wow what a great review on this rifle! I was going to dump the stock trigger and put a Giessle G2S but seeing this guy was getting sub moa, I don't think I will waste my money on one

You do understand that with any production rifle like a Sport II you are going to get some variance in the trigger from gun to gun. Not all guns will be the same.

I do suggest putting the gun through its paces before you swap anything out. IIRC Mr Guns and Gear shot about 2500 rounds through the gun before posting his video review.

As different as Mr Gunsngear and Nutnfancy are, their reviews complemented nicely. It was interesting that Nutnfancy was fine with the Sport 'I's lack of FA and dustcover, and was happy with the original handguard, while running the rifle in a fairly harsh (cold, snow) environment.

NOW, if Rob Ski at the AK Operator's Union will just run a Sport II through his 5,000 rd endurance test... ;)

They definitely come from different perspectives on things. As far as the endurance test, we might have one already from a forum member here in another thread. If he's straight up on everything, it looks like he's run 10,000+ rounds through his and shot out the barrel. Discussion is still in progress if the barrel is shot out or if it's something else.
