Got my first AR a few weeks ago...a M&P15 Sport 2 with iron sights (A2 front sight and MBUS rear sight). Love the rifle and had some great groupings at 25 feet on the range.

While I want to be proficient with iron sights, and will practice with them, I think I also want to get a red dot. Anyone have a recommendation for a red dot sight that will work with the existing A2 front post sight? I think they call it a "co-witness" sight?

Give the rifle was only $700, I don't want to spend a huge amount on the red dot, but a couple of hundred bucks would be fine. Any recommendations?

I agree with jjfitch, the Romeo5 is a great red dot and the shake-awake feature is awesome. Just used mine in a carbine class.

I will echo the suggestion for SIG Romeo 5.
The shake awake is outstanding, and durability tests very impressive.

Put a Sig Romeo 5 on a PCC, turned into a can roller at 50 yards..put it on a mid rise so I could co-witness the front sight. Shake awake is a great feature.

There's cost conscious and then there's cheap. Cheap tends to cost more in the long run. I've got an Aimpoint I bought in 1982 that still works fine.

I have a Burris FastFire 3 that seems to work pretty well... and doesn't break the bank.

I have the same model as you.

I got a Sig Romeo 5XDR because it gives you the option of either a 2 MOA red dot or a 65 MOA circle/dot reticle.

With the circle turned on you can quickly aim the rifle, with both eyes open, & see the circle thru the sight for near targets.

With the supplied extra base the AR's metal front sight co-witnesses in the bottom 1/3 for the red dot sight, does not interfere with the red dot's operation, & you can still use the AR's metal sights, if wanted/needed, thru the lens.

It also uses a "AAA" battery instead of one of the smaller coin batteries, which is nice.

The MSRP is $259(?) & since everything related is in short supply it'll probably be hard to find it for a lot cheaper.

Can't go wrong with the Aimpoint PRO. If you want to save a bit, the Vortex Crossfire II is another good option. I have a Holosun on a CZ S2 that I like, but I'd not want it on an AR.

Folks here have recommended several very good red dot sights and I don't disagree with any of them. However, before you take the plunge you may want to determine if you prefer an "open" red dot sight (has a single front lens with an open body) or a "tubular" style (the kind that looks like a small scope). I've been looking for a red dot for my M&P 15-22 and have been watching quite a few "how to choose a red dot sight" videos on YouTube. Both styles have their Pros and Cons, but the biggest is going to usually be how it feels for YOU to use it. Nothing I can say will change that one bit for you.

The other option is to consider a laser, which I spent all of $15 for one just to see what it would be like. By the way, not only was it pretty cheap but a lot of fun as well! Once I got it zeroed-in using my iron sights I don't even have to sight the rifle in the traditional manner to get a solid hit so long as I can see the dot on the target.

Considering your needs and price point consider an Aimpoint Pro.

Visible lasers have utility but have significant limitations.

Two points: No way would I depend on a 15.00 visible laser for anything other than as a meaningless pointer.

Secondly, unless the output power level exceeds the federal law maximum, distance is greatly limited in daylight, especially when the target is in daylight.

I completely agree with every one of your points, hands down. However I wanted to try one just for fun and didn't want to burn through my discretionary money over something I might not enjoy, so I figured I couldn't get hurt for $15. And I'm not even remotely using my M&P15-22 for self-defense. "Having Fun" was more my objective.

I'll save my money for the bigger expense of a nice red dot once I find one I think I will like. At that point the laser will either sit in the back of my safe or get handed down to someone else.

I cannot find a Sig Romeo 5xdr that are in stock. Which is the one I want. Been looking periodically for months and have not ever found one in stock.

If someone can locate one for under $300 I’d be “on it like a chicken on a June bug”.

I have an Aimpoint Pro as well..... it’s expensive but worth every penny. If you can figure out how to make it work, it is worthy of serious consideration.

Vortex, lifetime warrantee, and reasonably priced, works great.

Sig Romeo (mfg.?) for a cheap red dot, Aimpoint are great or go big and get the Eotech true holographic sight (military grade). Stay away from Holosun only because they are manufactured by the ChiComms. Too many great ones made in the US of A.

I really like the Sig Romeo5 for an good, affordable red dot. Auto on-off if you barely touch the rifle, 40,000 hour battery(IIRC), maybe 20,000...either way it’s a lot of hours.
Top load battery without moving the sight.
I think it’s the best deal for the money. I found mine on sale for under $100.

I run both an Aimpoint PRO and an Eotech 512. I like them both. Each has its own strengths. But you probably wouldn’t be able to appreciate either of them fully without spending some time with each. I got both thinking I’d eventually sell one and keep the other. I’m still evaluating.

The Romeo 5 is made in China and at least one source states it's made in the same factory as Holosun. I know the controls and functions are exactly the same.

i picked up a Romeo 5 as my first red dot and have been happy with it

They build stuff to sell at a price point with a certain profit margin. If the US designers/importers spec the quality, it will be built properly. Same with anything manufactured anywhere.

That is, of course, subject to graft and cutting corners. There needs to be US QC directly working for the importer.

I thought I would follow up. With the resolution.

Turns out we looked at our inline bank account. The money was taken out and sent to Zell. And then on the same day the exact same amount was credited back into my account. Without notice.

I suspect Zell may have been aware of the scam and would not allow the transaction to occur. We cannot explain it any other way.

I still don’t have my red dot. But at least I still have my $239!!!

This is the second time I have tried to buy the Romeo 5XDR. And both times I was unable to purchase! I think God is telling me to get a different optic!

I certainly understand that. It's like Miroku of Japan. If the customer wants high end they get high end. If they want junk they get junk. I was just making the point that Romeo 5's are made in China. Having said that I do like my Holosun. So far it's been a great optic.

I haven't had a chance to use it yet. Any opinions on that one?

I have a Trijicon RMR2 red dot on a S&W model 629, Vortex Strike Fires I & II red dots on pistols and Vortex Strike Eagles on AR's, the Strike Eagles were designed specifically for AR platforms.

Any of the sights will meld easily and offer co-witness.

I have one Vortex Crossfire and two Sigs - a Romeo 5 and a Romeo MSR. They all seem to be excellent and very reliable. The oldest (the Vortex) is probably about 7 years old. They have all been perfect so far. They hold zero well, and have good battery life. I always keep a spare battery in my shooting bag just in case, though.

Depends... how good is your eyesight? If you are trying to hit a four inch clay target from 200 yards or more, you might want a little magnification. But a red dot really isn't the right tool for that job anyway.

I did the same thing. I ended up selling the EOTech 512. I didn't like the busy reticle,
found I preferred just a single dot.

Of all the red dots I've shot and others I have looked thru, I still prefer my Aimpoint PRO.

I am sure the aimpint is fantastic optic. But an aimpoint pro is not a $250 optic either! The aimpoint cost as much as I paid for the sport 2!

I am not a regular weekly shooter. I refuse to pay as much for the optic as I did for the rifle.

Another satisfied owner of SIG Romeo5. I like it so well I brought a second one that was on sale for $99.95 during Black Friday week. There is a torture test of it on Youtube that convinced me of it’s roughness. The second Romeo5 that I brought is probably going on a AR Pistol that I am building.
