I have a newer M&P Sport. I have been shooting it several times and I really like it. It's my first AR15 style and looking to upgrade the stock. Main reason for the upgrade is to get an M-LOK attachment point for a sling (The front attachment was simple, just need a rear attachment point). I have the NJ "compliant" version of the Sport which is without the adjustable stock. I've read everywhere that an AR15 stock is so simple to change out - I'm struggling. I bought the Magpul MOE SL stock and it fits nicely, however - when I tighten the screw down it messes up the buffer tube spring.
Just looking for ideas - thanks for reading!

When changing an AR stock, the buffer spring is the last thing to go in.

Can't you leave it out till the stock is on? No clue what a NJ compliant stock is.

Thank you for the input. I didn't even remove the buffer spring at all. I slid the old stock off and the new stock on.

The compliant version is a non-adjustable stock, so it can't slide. It's just screwed in...

Take the buffer and spring out and try it.

Bet it works for ya!

The advantage of mounting it to the end plate is the gun can carry higher but it requires buffer tube removal which is really easy.
Have Magpull stocks that mount the push button release on the sides , they work too.

I am a little confused as usual . Not familiar with compliant version.

Isn't the MOE SL an adjustable stock that would just slide on and latch into holes in the buffer tube? Where is the screw to tighten and how would it affect the spring?

Did you change the buffer tube?

Photos may help.

Thanks for the reply! Here in NJ - we can't have an adjustable stock. Yay for us. So the stock has to be screwed into the buffer tube in only 1 place. There are not several slots for the stock to latch into along the buffer tube. This is the NJ-compliant version difference.
I did not change the buffer tube. The existing screw that was used is too long and affects the spring action in the buffer tube.
I'll get some pictures.

Fixed position stock ! Hum . NJ sucks in so many ways . You do have the option for a carbine length non adjustable stocks if you change over for a carbine buffer tube for a shorter reach . Personally I'm not a fan of AR rifle stocks . Many of these shorter stocks also have sling points on them too .

OK sounds like the screw is literally crushing the tube, impeding the spring. Normally on a standard AR carbine the stock adjustment is spring loading, so there is not enough pressure to affect the spring.

I'd recommend replacing the tube with a standard M4 multi detent tube, BUT that may not be legally possible. Next best answer is why are you using a screw when a standard M4 adjustable stock comes with the spring loaded detent? Did you remove the detent and put the screw in? If so go back to the detent
