The SW9V is the OLD model Sigma with a stainless slide ad gray poly frame. It is NOT the enhanced version aka the SW9VE or SW9E. The SW9F and its derivatives like the SW9V were plagued with reliability issue, parts breakages and spotty quality control. Some good guns did make it off the line, but to a degree the poor reputation of the original Sigma was deserved. There are several difference between the two guns. The E-series updates include: shorter slide and barrel, slide shape, frame texture, internal fit & finish, trigger system changes, enlarged ejection port, proprietary rail, etc. Here's a pic of the SW9V.

I had one of the first Sigmas, and it was the all gray "value" model. I never saw one with the gray frame and bright slide--may not be original? I sold my grey one and replaced it with the current SW9VE.
I would be most concerned about what "improvements" had been done to the gun and whether it works reliably. S&W is not going to "upgrade it" to match current production, which is noticeably different.
If it does work, shoot it. If not, find some Sigma collector and tell him you have this unique variant he really must have...........

I had one of the original "F" models and found it to be every bit as reliable as a new Sigma. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Buy some good ammo, take it out and shoot it. Or, if you're concerned, have a gunsmith check it out first.
I'd like to get another "F" model, but prices at the gun shows are crazy high for them.

Like I said, some good guns did come off the line. At a police acadmy shoot in the mid-90's there were about 6 officers shooting Sigmas. 2 were accurate, reliable and their owners were very happy with them, 2 were awful and would constantly FTF, FTE, etc., 2 were okay but kept having parts break. So in my experience you have a 33% chance of having a good one. Like Panther said; go get some ammo and shoot it. If it works Yahoo! If not, send it in to S&W and have them make it work.

I've fired one that my pal has and it was my 1st experience with the Sigma. It was grittier in the trigger but still a good gun as it did shoot without malfunction and was accurate. I have read where some guys sent their old models in for correction on some frame cracking at or around the muzzle, and S&W gave them the opportunity to trade into any VE model they had available.
I would keep the pistol and shoot it to death.

Smith and wesson has a lifetime warranty on all firearms. No ifs ands or buts. Just call S&W customer service, they send you a shipping label. You send it in, they fix it or replace it and send it back. No money out of your pocket.

I also have a sw9v and have had no problems with it. The only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't have a rail system to mount a light. Was told S&W has been putting them on there for 15 years but I have had this since 2005.

well I was perusing my old posts and came across this one,UPDATE The gun shoots awesome.I have accumulated several more pistols since 2011,but this one remains my nightstand piece. My wife insists on it because of the ease of operation without safeties, etc. and I am confident in its ability to go BANG!!!!Sigma believer for sure now!!!
