Has S&W discontinued the SD9/40?
A local dealer is telling me that they have, based on his inability to find any 'in the system'. He's never heard of them and his S&W supplier isn't showing any ever having been in inventory. Weird.......

Poor sales is my understanding--they could not differentiate it enough between the M&P and Sigma's.

A couple of months ago they were still listed on the website, just went and loooked- at first there was no link to SDs, I refreshed and the top of the list was SD9 & SD40. Clicked and got an error. Refreshed again, looked thru all 6 pages of "Pistols" and nada- no pic of an SD.
Now I'm troubled- not worried about service, but was considering trading my SD for another pistol- if they're no longer made, anyone think they'll hold their value pretty good now?

Probably more than they would if they were still being made - IMHO.

I'm sure in about 25-40 years they will start selling at collector premium prices. Ok...maybe I'm not sure.

gkitch, I understand completely- kinda like the weatherman, can't get it right for the weekend, but wants to tell us in 50 years there'll be no ice for the polar bears.
accessbob, I've been thinking about trading my SD, this just made the decision a little harder. Anybody wanta invest in a really nice pistol, that might be valuable- in 25-40 years?

Looks like the few up on GB are going for $400-$450...don't know whether that's good or bad news for you? Dump it now would be my advice...before it becomes a huge issue.

I'm not gonna sweat it- it's a Smith, and I like it well enough. If I run up on what I want, and have to take a minor beating ok- if major, I'll keep it. Figure I can't go wrong with an extra S&W in the drawer.

I kind of doubt sigma's will have any collector value. I'm not sure why you would even want one.

That's the right attitude, my thoughts were based on your apparent desire to rid yourself of it. A S&W will always go bang and be serviceable, so taking your approach, you should be good to go.

My SD9 doesn't eat much, so I see no need to find it a new home. My wife, however.........

As you can probably see in the other thread, a new SD is being released. It's a conglomeration of the Sigma and the SD. Let's pray it DOES NOT have the heavy trigger the Sigma does. If it doesn't, then they will have a winner.

The Sig does have the stainless- well, bright stainless- slide, so I gotta figure the new SD VE just means stainless slide. The trigger on my SD is better than the Sigma- I've only fired the SD not the Sig, but have read reviews saying SD's is better- named the 'SD Trigger,' in fact.
I had mentioned the pssoibility of trading my SD, with this news- I'll be holding on to it. Need to order the springs for sure now.

BTW, not being a smart a--- but I don't currently own an SD but if S&W makes it,I eventually will at sometime. As far as collectable...I remember when Model 10 K frames and 22 Escorts could hardly be given away, now they bring premiums!!!

My SD was 8.25-8.5 pounds after 1000 rounds or so. Then I put in the apex kit and now is around 6.25.

My Apex equipped SD9 also runs just over 6lbs. But it is also much much smoother so it feels like 5-5.5lbs.

Honestly I see the SDVE replacing both the Sigma and SD, there is really no point in producing 3 different pistols that are so close in price

I bought a SD9 when they announced it was being discontinued. Got it NIB for $369. I had been on the fence about getting one for a while and I knew if I was going to get it I better do it now. I have been very pleased with it.
I kinda figured they would do something along the lines of this. No reason to have all 3 (Sigma, SD, & M&P) and the M&P was too well recieved to mess with. What made the most since was sorta combine the Sigma and SD and just have 2 lines

Ok, let me clarify, with the possible exception of the very first one produced. I doubt any Sigma will ever have any collectable value.

For a while, I couldn't even find them in stores. This was last year - might as well been discontinued back then. One store sold them ONLY in a "home defense kit" or something. I knew something wasn't going right for the line when I saw that.

Kill both and make a mid size M&P (Glock 19 size) in 9 and 40. 4 size M&P's make more sense than all these gun lines.

I think this is all internet rumor. I've heard nothing from legit sources that S&W is ditching the SD line.

As discussed, the SD line is NOT gone. The SD and Sigmas have been merged into a new model, the SD9VE and SD40VE.
See here (on their website): SD9 VE

The SD has been discontinued as they are no longer making them only the SDVE which lacks the sights and finish

In all fairness we're kind of arguing over semantics here. When S&W turned the SW9F into the SW9E then into the SW9VE those 'very specific' model numbers were technically discontinued, but they are all still Sigmas. The designation went away but the line lived on. The SD9 was an experiment to see if they would sell at that price point, they did buy not well enough to justify production. So they lowered the cost of production and lowered the consumer cost and reintroduced it. But it's still basically just an SD9. I am sure down the road we will see a melonite slide again or maybe even an OD or FDE frame. As soon as interest starts to feign Smith loves to come out with something else I just have to own.

A Kia Sedona LX is still a Sedona just as a Kia Sedona (no letter designator) is still a Sedona. Different features, but still the same vehicle.
SD9 - SD9VE.....SD40 - SD40VE ---- still the same model. Different features, different styling, but an SD none-the-less.

How is that it lacks the finish and the sights S&W no longer makes the SD you can call it what ever you want but the fact remains you can no longer but a new manufactured SD.

Now I hope Smith & Wesson doesn't come out with an OD or FDE framed SD9 VE. That means another SD9 will be discontinued and the SD9 will have to be reintroduced as an SD9, which is of course a complete different gun (as in different color frame).

By your logic, Glock no longer makes the 23 because a Glock 23 Gen 3 had a rail added and thumb indentations on the frame which changed the look of the gun considerably. So what in the blue blazes is a gun named the Glock 23 existing still and now it has gotten WORSE - as they was no longer the Glock 23 and then the Gen 4 added the textured finish, replaceable backstraps, dual recoil spring assembly, enlarged mag release and reversible, slide and barrel resized and front portion of the frame enlarged to support the dual recoil spring assembly.
Yes, I think you have failing logic and an SD9VE is STILL an SD so they ARE making the SD LINE.

Can we call the new line the SD gen 2? Which means they are no longer producing gen 1. Would that characterization satisfy everyone?
If someone asked me if the "new" SD's were the same as the "old" SD's, I'd say yes except for the finish and sights. And they make small changes on all the time on different models. Take a look at all of the dashes on the different revolvers. Did they discontinue one model and introduce another model just because the new ones aren't pinned and recessed?
I do agree with MLK18 that really it's all semantics. In the end, does it matter?
