S&W SD40 VE round chambering issues
I randomly just started having problems with my gun cambering rounds jamming on and off every other round. I have had the gun since about July and only fired about 200 rounds. I noticed this problem after my last trip to the range where I used standard range ammo and it worked fine. The ammo I have for home defense is federal hollow tips. I have had the ammo since I bought the gun and every so often when I haven't been to the range, I cycle the rounds thru the gun and reload them back back in the mag just to make sure the gun is still functional. I have recently pulled the gun apart and cleaned and oiled down everything (even wiped down the ammo) and immediately It appeared to have resolved the issue but after sitting a week later, the problem returned. Anyone else know of this problem or know of a solution?

Call S&W They have a fix for that. You may have to send the gun in for the fix.

Was hoping it wouldn't come to that. Just to be on the safe side, I'm going to pick up some new ammo and see if the problem continues.

Is this with HP ammo cycled by hand that your having problems with ?
Kind of confused, if it's happening when firing and which ammo it's with.

How confident are you with a dremel? You just need to cut a half moon slightly where the ramp meets the chamber. That's what S&W will do.

would have to buy or borrow one, and would need to instructions/pics of what I would be doing.. Maybe I will also call the dealer I bought it from since its under 1 year and see if they offer warranty repairs or something since this is a known problem.

I've never had that problem with mine. It might be because I took precautions & polished the feed ramp. Mine looks like a mirror & is very smooth to the touch. I did the same thing to my Glock 23 (now my son's) when I used it as an armed security officer. I use American Eagle FMJ 165 gr for range fire, Speer Gold Dot JHP 165 gr & Federal Tactical HST 180 gr for self defense.

WAIT A MINUTE! Is the problem with cycling the ammo through the gun by hand or is it with a failure to feed when shooting?
If it is when cycling the ammo by hand it is a problem of technique not a problem with the gun.
If it is a failure to feed when shooting the problem needs further investigation do determine the reason as there are many possible reasons.

Are you "riding down the slide"? Typically for a gun to feed right you have to have the slide retracted all the way to the rear and just let it go. If you try to ease it down it won't feed right.

S&W SD40 VE round chambering issues
when hand cycling my SD40 VE much prefers rather "violent" slide racking. if I am "gentle" it doesn't cycle well...when hand cycling don't try to ease the slide at all...pull back sharply and let it go in one fluid motion...as if the gun were doing it when fired. or try using the slide release and see how it does...

Go shoot the ammo you are having the problem with and see if it does it. if it does I would call smith and deal with them directly. If they want you to send it in they will send you a shipping label. Dealing with your LGS could delay the process a another week or two.

Ok experimented last night.... the gun is fine. As long as I pulled the slide back hard enough, it feed the ammo fine. Thanks guys

Bullet setback in .40
Please do not cycle the rounds over and over again. Bullet setback in .40 can lead to extreme pressure spikes which can blow up the gun.
please read this article.
Beware: Bullet Setback and rechambering of .40 cal duty ammo
This problem seems to manifest itself in .40 more than any other caliber. The .40 operates on a large pressure spike like .38 super. Look at the rounds and over time the bullet will begin to look deeper set in the case.

I was just about to log on and ask advice on the same issue. I purchased my SD40VE 2 weeks ago. My brother and I shot about 200 rounds of winchester 185 gr through it with no problems. The next week (4 days ago) I took it to the range and purchased the range ammo (PMC 180 gr) and after about 50 rounds I started to have the mis feed issue. I figured I didn't clean it properly the week before and took it home to clean again. 2 days later (yesterday) I took my CPL class and they sold me another box of PMC ammo but it was 165 gr. During our range time I was having the same issue. I would fire a round and the slide would not fully load the next round in. The instructor said it was my grip. Changed grip and happened again. He fired it and it happened. Second instructor fired it and it happened. We let the gun cool down and we took it apart and looked at it. Nothing appeared out of place. I call S&W and they said they have never heard of this issue before. They asked about the ammo I was using and informed me PMC is made in Korea and might be the issue. Today I took it to the range and fired 50 rounds of winchester and had no issues. I then fired 46 rounds of the PMC I had left over and had several mis feeds. I then shot another 50 rounds of winchester and had no issues. I thought it was this PMC ammo but I see you are having the same issue. Do you know what ammo you were using? I see everyone else shooting with the PMC and not having a single issue. I hope I didn't make a mistake by not buying the Glock for $200 more.
