I was wondering if there is a grip plug available for the hole on the grip next to where the mag base plate sits.

I have also wondered the same thing, one for added wieght like they have for the the M&P would be nice

Just checked out of curiosity. Midway got them in stock:
Smith & Wesson Frame Plug S&W SW40C, SW40E, SW40F, SW40G, SW40GP, SW40P, SW40V, SW40VE, SW9C, SW9E, SW9F, SW9G, SW9GP, SW9P, SW9V, SW9VE
Maybe someone who owns both SD and SW can check if the shape of the frame opening is the same shape.
For that price I would just order one and if it won't fit - oh well.

With a little sanding Im sure it would fit!

Well if you tinker a bit you could alter it so it would just be like a lid and fill the hollow space in the grip with lead or steel (shot pellets or fishing weights) and then just put the plug on with epoxy.
Even though that would be a final thing and it would be hard to take off afterwards if you have to send the gun back to S&W in case of a warranty return. I guess that would void your warranty for sure.
Mix up a little JB Weld, or some Sakrete...
I do like the frame plugs on Glocks...I've always put them in Glocks I have owned. I did learn early on that they are called frame or grip plugs, and not butt plugs. You get some strange looks when you ask about butt plugs in a gun shop.

I was thinking of melting down a rim wieght and filling the gap in, then it would be heavy and would sit perfectly. lead has a low melting point so i think if i could just get it softened enough maybe i could just pressfit it in

I do have a few Glocks one of them is a Glock 43. I have found that the
Grip plug that I have in my Glock 43 does fit in my S&W SD9VE. I assume that it will work in the SD40VE also
