Can't remember how dirty my SD9VE was when I bought from Atwood's, but I know they are supposed to fire a couple of rounds at the factory to function check. Could be from that?

Yeah, I have 350 rounds through mine and it's not that bad. Definitely wouldn't look like that from a test fire at s&w.

I'm not sure how many times S&W test fires a gun, but it's not over a few rounds, if all goes well. I once asked S&W why they didn't clean the gun after test firing it, and they told me that they test fired it to make sure it functioned correctly. If they broke it down and cleaned it, then they'd have to test fire it again after reassembly...and then clean it again...and you can see why not.

As for the OP's gun, I'd certainly say that doesn't look like any new S&W (or any other new gun, period) that I've ever bought. The problem now is that it's going to be hard to address this with Academy, since it's going to be hard for the OP to prove that he didn't fire the gun. The only way that I can think of is to ask Academy where they got the gun from (i.e. a distributor or direct from S&W) and then see if they can track anything from the serial number.

You have to look for wearing on slide groves and rails. Ring looks like mine did. Factory test firing.

Also might wanna check the barrel for smilies and other wear around the top/front of the chamber where it meets the slide.

Mine was shot at factory, it only had a bit of carbon in it and a realy slight ring in the same spot, yours has definitely been shot more then once though. That looks like a day on the range for mine. I would take it back to s&w and tell them about it

i contacted S&W and they say they fire it at the factory before it is sent out. so if you buy one, it will most likely have the carbon rings from being test fired.

i took the firearm apart and looked at everything and didnt see any wear marks or anything.

so rest easy if you have a little carbon on it.

I recently bought a new SD9VE from Academy Sports (manufacture date April 2016) and it doesn't look anywhere near as dirty as that. However, since you don't see any wear elsewhere, you should just clean it and shoot it. If anything does go wrong, S&W will fix it, so don't worry...just enjoy it.

That is a little unusual - I agree with others that it looks like more than just a few test rounds at the factory. It could be somebody had it, used it a bit, and returned it; there is no telling.

But... I'm not sure it matters! If the gun otherwise has no wear, and it functions correctly, then it might be best to let it go. If you make a guess it was fired 50 times... it only has 49,950 left before it needs maintenance from S&W.

The lesson -- and I need to remind myself of this, too -- is to inspect a gun before picking it up at the LGS. Really go over it for mars, nicks, etc., as well as wear (smilies, shiny spots, worn lands, excess powder or dirt, etc.).

Mention it to Academy? Why not? What remedy do you want -- to return it? I don't think you need to do that, but telling them you are not happy might make them cough up a discount on something or whatever. Good luck, enjoy the pistol!

I seriously doubt Academy will do anything. In the first place, how can he prove to them that he didn't fire it after he left the store? I've probably bought 10 or more guns at Academy, and every time they have stressed that all sales are final, that they don't accept returns, etc. (They will send a gun back to the factory for you if service is required, within a certain time frame.) I don't doubt that the OP is honest, but short of some verifiable proof, I don't know why Academy would see that any action on their part is necessary.

The best thing is to clean the pistol, shoot it, and not worry about it. IF a problem does develop, S&W will repair or replace it. If it was a gun from a manufacturer without a strong warranty and customer service program, I'd be very inclined to worry too...but with a S&W, I wouldn't. I do understand that when we buy a new handgun, we want it to actually BE new. Perhaps this serves one purpose: a detailed inspection of any gun before completing the purchase is absolutely warranted. If the seller, be it a retailer or private individual, won't permit that, then walk away.
