SD9ve good ccw?
Hi
want to add higher capacity to my ccw. Have carried a sw640 then bought a Taurus Pt111 G2 but am really hearing lots of bad things about the Taurus reliability. I have a SW915 for years as well but too heavy to carry all day concealed. I am thinking of buying the SD9 ve on line at gun broker. Any thoughts on the SD9 ve as a concealed weapon?

A full size gun probably isn't most people's first choice, but it can be done.
I bought a SD9VE as a house gun for my wife because of the narrower grip (compared to my Glock) and the very easy to rack slide.
I've carried it a few times when we're out together. In my cheapo Concealment Express holster, it prints a bit more than I'd prefer due to the full size grip. I prefer my Glock 30S grip height or an even smaller pistol.
Again, if you don't mind carrying a full size pistol, a quality holster that holds the gun tight to the body and a little dressing around the gun should be easy enough. (Years ago, I regularly carried a 4506 or a Glock 21. It certainly can be done).
The other option is get something more compact (M&P 9c, Glock 26, etc.) and then carry a spare full size mag.

The host of single-stack pistols, most with short grips, probably lend themselves more to CCW. I have a lot of use for the SD9VE and SD40VE pistols, but can't see them as being easy to keep concealed across the range of everyday activities and settings (would be fine under a jacket during a walk in the countryside, however). And I think the problem would get harder during warm weather. When I carry, I tend to carry a J frame in a pocket, or to upgrade to a S&W 3913 or P239 on the belt -- all relatively small.

I carry my SD9 and my SD40. i use an IWB holster and have no problems. My work days are 8 to 10 hours. I think you can get used to anything if you really want to. I have two Shields as well but prefer the SD's so that's what I mostly carry.
I used to have a PT111 and the only problem I ever had was it was picky about ammo. No matter what I did with some ammo the firing pin would hit lightly. It didn't like perfecta. I put a lot of ammo through that gun. I did end up selling it and that's when I bought the SD40.

The sd9ve is a reliable gun, but for me it's not as easy to conceal as some others . I too have a taurus pt111 millenium g2 and a shield9mm. I mostly carry the shield, but the taurus gets carried a lot also. I have over 700 rounds through both guns with no failures of any kind using different ammo including a lot of perfecta from walmart.

If you don't mind me saying, buy the SD9 or the SD40 if you want a GREAT CCW! I own (5) of the S&W fantastic plastic pistols;
SW9VE, SW40VE, SD9VE, SD40VE, SD9.
The SD9 & SD40 has HI-VIZ night sights, a lighter more crisper trigger, a very rough textured grip, and, they are all black, which can be concealed better in the dark. The latter of my sentence might seem trivial to some, but, in a life or death situation, being stealth (black pistol VS stainless slide) has its advantages.

The correct holster is probably the most important thing for concealability, I carry my SD40 every day in a uncle mikes super slide 15 holster. I loop my belt on the outside of the holster to keep my gun tight to my side, I wear a button up shirt and don't tuck it in. I also slip a extra mag in my pants pocket. If my pants are on my SD is on my side.

You can carry just about any size pistol with the correct holster. On occasion I will carry a Glock 22 and can concel it just fine

The SD9VE is roughly analogous to a Glock 19, so I wouldn't exactly call it a full size gun, but it's not a compact either.

Thank you all for this very helpful information. I have carried since 1992. For work environment I would mostly wear a sw640 in a renegade ankle holster covered by a sock. With the recent increase in violence I wanted more capacity and bought a PT111 G2 which i carry in a Sticky Holster under my t-shirt and my business shirt. No belt clips allowed at my work place and do not want the butt of the gun poking out more than it does already with the PT111. I just discovered the Stick Holster and it has really made a difference for me. I do not leave my gun in a glove compartment, I carry it with me all the time, mostly and that means at work. I am kinda concerned with some of the issues being reported regarding the PT111 G2, but every time I go to the range and put 50 rounds through it I feel much better about having it as my ccw.

If your ok carrying it (Taurus) then more power to you. But I would not trust my life with a Taurus. The SD is a good choice but if you want something with good compacity and exceptional reliblty get a Glock.

I own a real Glock (Gen 4 G17) and I own (5) "POOR MAN GLOCKS";
SW9VE, SW40VE, SD9VE, SD40VE, SD9.
Since getting the SD9 just recently, that's my carry gun. It has now kicked all of the others out of the sack. Even the Rugers. Although, I do like my Ruger 9E.

The main issue is carrying a "compact service" sized pistol. It can certainly be done, but involves a degree of Deciding to do so, using suitable belt and holster, and dressing around the gun. I routinely carry guns of such size, but a substantial portion of the marketplace wants tiny guns.
Of guns of that catagory, the SD is certianly servicable, but that whole market segment is all compared to the Glock 19 .

SD9VE is currently $280 at Academy Sports, depending on where you live. Sale ends 2-14-17. That being said, the SWaMPy Shield 9 is much smaller and the Ruger LC9s Pro is a bit smoother. Both are selling locally for around $350 dollars, but they are single stack guns.

My SW9&40VE both came with a 12.5 lb trigger from the factory. They both now house an APEX trigger & spring kit, along with all moving parts mirror polished. Trigger pull weight, SW9VE-7.6 lbs., SW40VE-7.3 lbs. I can live with that.

I have both a SD9VE and a PT 111 G2. Both are excellent guns. I'd say the Taurus wins out for cc due to size and trigger reset. I put in an Apex trigger on the SD9VE. I felt that it needed some help in that department. I have replaced the stock Taurus recoil spring assembly with a Lakeline. Never had a problem with the stock one but I am a tinkerer. Some folks have had problems with the mag release on the G2. But I have 2 of them and not a problem.
Now let me yank your chain the other way...What do you think about 380's? SW Bodyguard or the new Taurus Spectrum? I know that doesn't meet your higher capacity requirement. Sorry for muddying the waters!

I carry my SD40VE IWB (alien gear) every day. I work retail and am constantly bending, squatting, reaching overhead, the works. Your body type, carry position, and dress all say whether or not it can be done.

Wife carried the Ta for a year and had no problems. At least a dozen range trips at 100+ rounds per trip-went to a G43.

Hi Nevadabob and thanks for the info on both guns. I really don't know much about the SW bodyguard 38 or the spectrum. I have always carried SW guns, 640; 4506; and the 915 but mostly the 640 (5 shot 38) but wanted the extra capacity and the Pt111 G2 is perfect and I am really glad to hear you are using the PT as your ccw. Thanks!

Thanks, The Nothing, I am going to the gun shop and try the sdve 9 in my cc holster. Also, is there a big or any difference in a SD9 or a SDVE 9?
Thanks again!!

S&W calls them SD40 VE and SD9 VE Series SD VE ah marketing, all is marketing.
I tried the APEX trigger and spring kit in my SW9VE but the trigger followed and the pull was not reduced...sigh...APEX pulled the trigger install from their video..see other topic.
Geoff
Who bought a Walther Creed recently I'm very pleased with the pistol and it's trigger.

I would consider it kind of a BIG difference, but, yes, there IS a difference in the (2).
The SD9's grip texture is much rougher, stippled more. It's A LOT better than the SD9VE's grip. The SD9 has HI-VIZ night sights. The SD9's triggers is much smoother and has a much crisper break. Also, the reset is much better as well. One more thing, you might find trivial, but, matters to me, the SD9 is ALL black! It has more of a stealth look to it, if you like that. I DO!

I am 6' ft and weigh 180. I carry the SD9VE every day and use the Alien Gear 3.0 I sometimes forget I have the IWB holster because it is comfortable. One problem: I had to trade the 3.0 back for a earlier holster because I was allergic to the Neoprene. Had a very bad active rash but no rash with just the leather.
