The 1911 has been refined and re- refined over the years that I would think it is hard to beat as an out of the box or custom version. Take a look at the guns in the winner's circle of your dicipline and get one like the other top performers.

I have several high end 45's. A Colt Combat Elite, Kimber Stainless Target II, S&W PC CQB prototype, HK USP and others.
My most accurate S&W 45 is a standard out of the box model 645. Outshoots all the aforementioned guns. It does under 2" at 15 yards and is more accurate than I am. Give one a try. Regards 18DAI.

I'm a long time Bullseye shooter and of the many (center-fire) pistols/revolvers I shoot regularly (including a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup, a S&W Model 52-2, a Colt Officers Special and a S&W Model 1955 Target), my Performance Center 945 is as accurate as any of them and is as reliable as the revolvers. I have no qualms in recommending it highly.

Years ago when I was shooting bullseye competitively, the custom 45s were typically in the winners circle. At that time, Jim Clark built the best bullseye and hardball guns. Currently, I would look at the Les Baer line of guns. You really need to put them on a Ransom rest to see what they are capable of shooting. Most of the 45s today are built for combat shooting and not bullseye so are not fitted as tightly. I shoot an Ed Brown 45 but it's not as accurate as others I've owned.

Don't forget about the 845, they will out shoot most anything. And the prices have been less then a comparably shooting 1911 or 945.
Theres one on Gunbroker right now with a scope mount included.

The S&W 645 is as good as any and better than most.

What works for one may not be good for another. Buy what you like and are comfortable with and shoot it. I have several customs and factory 1911 guns. Almost any of them will shoot great. It is often more accuracy in the shooter than the gun.

I have a Series 80 "Enhanced" model Gold Cup bought in '94. Recently, I purchased a SW1911 (sku#108284). I would say the two guns are comparable in terms of features straight out of the box, but I have to admit, this "non-Performance Center" gun is better than the GC in many ways. The Bo-Mar sights are better and more durable then the old Colt Elliasons, the trigger is noticeably crisper, the grip safety has better implemented beaver tail versus the "duck bill" type that the Colt uses. All in all, a very good counterpart to the GC that is every bit as accurate.
