I've been on the hunt for a Galco Miami classic for my 4506's for months now and no luck, since they are close in size I was wondering if a 1911 version would work? Anyone try this? Any other ideas?

The 1911 won't work, the 4500 series is taller from the trigger guard to the top of the slide. Best guess would be a Sig 220 might work, Galco doesn't make the 4500 holster anymore?

I sold a Miami Classic that fit the 4506 a few months ago. The holster was fine, I just decided I did not like a shoulder holster. Anyway, the one I had was marked only as S&W auto. It worked with my 59 series pistols, but also fit my late 4506 with round triggerguard. It would NOT fit an early hooked trigger guard. Something to keep in mind while looking for one. Also, I have found holsters made for the Sig P220 also fit the 4506, but again probably something you have to check on a case by case basis.

Excellent! thanks guys SIG models are easy to find, the Miami calssic is no longer made for 3rd gen Smiths as far as I can find so I have to look for an old one which is hard or just get a new one.

You might try a full size Beretta model. They have a square trigger guard.I have a Safariland IWB for a 92 that fits all of my 3rd gen autos. Although the hooked trigger guards do fit best.

I lucked into a Galco shoulder holster that worked at a gun show. It was barely used and said it fits "Large Autos". My 4506 fits like it was made for it. The Galco I have for my 1911 will not fit the 4506. Call Galco. They are good folks and will be happy to help you!

NFRAME357... do report back with your results if you get a Miami classic for a SIG or whatever and it works for your 4506.

It would be nice to know what the other alternative are for fitting leather to a 4506.

Will do, I'm trying to find a used one so I won't have $130 or more in a hgolster that might/might not work.

Try Ted Blocker. I think he still offers that style of shoulder rig, and he made the original Miami Vice holster, not Galco.

With all due respect, the Ted Blocker Lifeline Rig was used for the first season and a half or so of Miami Vice. This is easily determined by watching the show and examining the harness. I can also e-mail jpg's if anybody is interested. The Galco rig used in later episodes was not a "Miami Classic" because it did not exist at the time. It was a Jackass Rig. The difference between those two is in the holster component. The rear harness attachment point on a Jackass Rig is below the gun's barrel, not above it as on a Miami Classic. This difference allows the gun in a Jackass Rig to be carried in a much more inclined, almost vertical position compared to the Miami Classic.

About 8 or 9 years ago, Ted Blocker made 20 or so commemorative reproductions of the Miami Vice Lifeline Rig for the Bren Ten. These were done using the original old style mag holders, upside down back plate ala Don Johnson's preference and inside out harness straps also ala Don Johnson. Included was a color photocopy of Michael Mann's original Purchase Order for the Miami Vice rigs.

Bruce,

Thanks for confirming my thoughts and for some really interesting details about the miami vice rigs. I was pretty sure about the first holster being a Blocker..... because that's what he told me. He seemed like a trustworthy guy to me.

Yep!

There are a lot of urban legends and conventional wisdom regarding the guns and holsters Crockett carried on the show. For example, the conventional wisdom is that Crockett carried a Smith 4506 during the final season of the show. Actually, the gun was a 645 transitional model. I know this because I've seem digital photos of that gun and one of the blank firing Bren Tens purchased by a collector in Pennsylvania. He purchased both from Charlie Gaunci, the prop master for the show. The second blank firing Bren Ten is owned by Don Johnson and was on display in the Las Vegas Planet Hollywood restaurant for some time.
