I plan to purchase a SW1911 (SKU 108299) and will need to replace the front site with a fiber optic.

Does anyone know the height of the front blade sight on this 1911 model and does anyone have a recommendation on which fiber optic front sight to purchase?

Thank you.

The S&W 1911 is likely the finest firearm ever made and certainly the best S&W has made.

I have two of them and would not change a thing but if I were to do so, I would take the gun to a qualified gunsmith and have it done professionally. The work will be better, work better and last longer.

I've tried a number of fiber optic sights and the one I like the best is the Firesight by Williams Gunsight. It appears sturdier than some of the others that I have suceeded in breaking. For my old eyes it is great. It looks as big as a stoplight which is good for me. Not everyone agrees. I showed it to a young police officer who was looking for a fiber optic for competition and he thought it was too much. If you can look at other shooters guns before purchasing.

Suggest you look at SKU 178011, pro series 1911 with factory Novak fiber optic sights.

By the time you change sights and do a trigger job on the other, you will have paid for the Pro Series, and still not have it.

Still no answer?

I already have the model 108282, and I have the same question - what is the correct height of the sight? For example, which of these sights from Brownell's would be most appropriate?

I'll be having my local shop do the work (and provide the part); I'm a klutz with tools.

I have put fiber optics on three 1911s, but not my S&W. You can measure the front sight when your gun arrives with good calipers. Then get the one closest to it. Your gun, like mine with the fiber optics has an adjustable rear sight, so you can deal with either height.

I bought Dawson and a Baer fiber optics. The Novak has the middle bar which will make it more sturdy, and will slightly reduce your light.

You can make the dot bigger or smaller by the amount you melt for the front bead. Buy extra fiber. I bought a pack with red, yellow and green to see which I like best. I like red most of the time. Green if it's real overcast.

The front (factory Novak 3 dot ) sight on my S&W 1911 is .142" off the crown of slide. The overall height from base of milled flat in slide is approx. .230"

As follow up, Dawson Precision stocks fiber optic front sights for the S&W 1911 and lists the correct height for factory sights. They confirm .142 is the direct replacement for factory fixed sights on the S&W 1911.
