I am loathe to put my name in a database that identifies me as the owner of a particular firearm. Will S&W provide warranty work if required if the user has the sales receipts showing that he is indeed the purchaser and the date purchased?

Yes, they'll even cover owners without a receipt. IMO, their service policy is up there with Leupold.

I always register my guns with S&W online. I'm not sure what the concern would be. I just complete the required fields, and not all the demographic information.

It is a marketing ploy.
I toured a modem plant a few years ago.
Previously, when they tested their modems for a couple weeks before shipping them out they found they had a certain number of failures.
But if they shipped them out right away their in-plant failure rate went way down. Surprise!
Their stockholders and bean counters loved the numbers.

They then implemented a new program of providing overnight replacement of failed modems with no questions asked.
Customers were thrilled with the company's fast response and zealous support.

The company called it a win/win situation for the modem company and customers.
I called it a damned lousy scam. The dirty looks I got!

I own a bunch of Leupolds and have never ever had to send one back. In my opinion they do not need their warranty.

Not true with my S&W's.
I have sent several back with a variety of problems.
I now own several newer model j-frames with fixed sights that do not hit to POA but because of the hassle I'm living with them.
The old models were dead-on with the proper bullet.

I don't care how good their warranty is they should never ship out a firearm with the problems we are seeing. Barrels crooked, cartridges won't extract, etc.

Old S&W's are still my favorite revolvers.

Quite frankly I just do not trust the government to not use this sort of information as an ersatz firearms registration system that they can decide to use for their own purposes.

I've had 5 S&Ws over the last 16 years, never had to use a warranty. I did sell the first one, a gen 1 Sigma, to a buddy who had to send it in for something: I had bought it from a pawn shop, sold it to my buddy, he sent it in and they fixed it with no problems and no questions asked: he's the owner, lifetime warranty applies, no registration and no receipt.

federal law can not require a customer to submit paperwork at time of purchase to activate a warranty. All you need is the original proof of purchase and the warranty paperwork spelling out the warranty inclusions and exclusions.

Also, for routine maintanence, the manufacturer can not require you to use their parts to keep the warranty valid as long as you use parts that meet or exceed the original manufacturer's parts specs. And can prove you did. Think spark plugs, oil and filters. Magnussen Moss act?
