rear sight laser for 6906

Well, I've been racking my brain for the last few years trying to get a laser on my 6906 without much luck. Then recently I saw a close up picture of the laserlyte rear sight lasers. The laser appears to be made in 2 configurations. One with the dovetail in the front and one with the dovetail at the rear. To fit all the other guns they list they use an adapter plate. So I said to myself... why not make your own adapter?

I ordered the rear sight laser for the M&P on the off chance that it would fit... close but no cigar.

I have attached a few photos of my first attempt.
The angle is wrong on the dovetail. Since I have Novak sights I figured the angle was 65 deg from info on the Novak web sight.
The angle appears to be closer to 75 deg. So I'll have to make a new adapter.

I thought I'd plant the seed in other brains in case someone can come up with a better idea.

Let the challenge begin!

That's my kind of thinking - make it fit. <G>

I used the Crimson Trace LG359 for the 59xx and cut them down to fit my 6906, 908 and CS9. Should be a thread around here with photos.

It looks like the laserlyte might be just a little closer aligned with the bore of the gun, but it is hard to beat the way the CT is activated.

Didn't LaserMax make a recoil spring guide rod laser for the short Smith autos? I have had a LaserMax in a Beretta M92 since the 1990s and think the recoil spring guide rod is the superior way to mount a laser on a pistol. The LaserLite would surely interfere with most holsters for the M6906, and would catch badly if pocket-carried. If LaserMax no longer makes a laser for the M6906, there are surely some used ones available.

Just read your work on the Crimson Trace grips...
Wow! that sound like a lot of work...
But, they do look good!

The rear sight laser was only $100 so I didn't mind (much) if it didn't work.
I also wasn't sure which gun I was going to put it on first.
I was hoping if it was easy I could put lasers on all my 3rd gen Smiths.

I would much prefer the Crimson Trace grips to the rear sight laser... The lines are much cleaner.

Thanks for the kind words. The CT's are a bit of work, but for a hundred bucks it would be hard to go wrong. Hope you get them working as I think a lot of people would like them. Let us know how it goes.

You're welcome to the avatar - you wore it long before I did (I'm only 39 years old <G>). I like the year on there. I was 70-72.

Finished the adapter and the laser is mounted...
Now to the range.

PS. The dovetail on the CS9 is the same as the 6906.
The height on my CS45 is different so I'll need a new adapter to put a laser on it.

Tom,

Great work on the adapter! How much would you charge someone to create that same adapter? I have a 3913 that could really use a laser! It looks like the CS9 and 3913 have the same sight dimensions.

I realize this thread is a year old, but it seems to be the most current on this matter.

I'm glad someone bumped this thread as I missed Tom's last post.

That really is a nice installation - and a much better cost than the (IMHO) badly overpriced CT's. The problem with the CT's is they have a patent on the grip activation and they take advantage of it.

But a little bird tells me that their patent runs out this summer. (Are you listening Tom?) Perhaps we'll see some new laser products in the next couple of years which use the grip activation switch.

I modified a bunch of the CT grips to fit the 6906, 3913 and CS9, but CT - perhaps anticipating the end of their patent - seems less interested in even selling their existing grips and seems to be concentrating on military applications. They will no longer sell me spare threaded blocks so I don't think I'll be doing any more modifications when the present stock is exhausted.

I love what you've done with CT! This is my wife's gun, and aesthetics are important. I'm trying to replicate Tom's setup with rosewood grips.

A machinist friend made the adapter for me.
So, I can't make more.
I'll look for my drawings and post them for reference.
I know they are "napkin sketches" so I'll try to clean them up.

As for activation of the laser...
One side of the sight holds the batteries and the other side has the laser.
On the back of the battery side is a small push button.
I use the thumb of my off hand to push it.
You can set it to pulse also.
This makes it easier to see and doubles the battery life.

Sorry this took so long.
I couldn't find my working drawings so I tried to measure the adapter I have.

Measurements with dovetails is very difficult.

Remember, this is for the rear sight laser for a S&W M&P.
