10mm vs. .357 Sig
Guys,
Let's just start this out by saying it was a great day to go to the range. It's even better when you are trying out something new. That would be my S&W M&P full size in .357 Sig. I picked this up in December from KY Gun Co for a steal and just now managed to get a chance to test it out. Came with three mags, nights sites and a .40 barrel for only $419. They are sold out now so don't go looking. Sorry.
Smith & Wesson MP Full Size Police Trade-In 40 SW / 357 Sig
Anyway, this was the first time I've ever fired a .357 Sig. Let's just say that it sounded like I was firing a hand cannon on the line. I kept thinking people were looking down at me to see what all the noise was about. And that was some flash coming out the end of the barrel. Fun, fun, fun!
Now I should say that I'm a long time 10mm fan. Been shooting that round for over 20 years. As luck would have it, I had my S&W 1076 with me today too. So I gave it a run through on the range also. I don't know what it was, but it felt tame compared to the .357 Sig.
Let's do some ammo comparison. I was running PRVI through both guns since I bought some from AIM Surplus for a pretty good price a while back.
.357 Prvi Partizan PPU .357 Sig 125grn FPJ 50rd Box
10mm Prvi Partizan PPU 10mm 180grn JHP 50rd Box
So for those of you who have shot both in the past, any guesses? Is the PRVI in 10mm just loaded wimpy? Because the PRVI .357 Sig did not seem this way. Perhaps the lighter weight of the M&P vs. the steel 1076 made it a perceived difference. Regardless, I think I found myself a new round to play around with. It was a fun day.
Thanks,
dwp10mm

I looked up the ballistics of the 10mm load. It's a 180 gn bullet moving at 1050 fps, which means that it's basically a 40 S&W in a 10mm casing. Not really surprizing, most commercial 10mm loads today are downloaded to 40 caliber ballistics.

To do a true comparison try some corbon 10mm loads. According to one of my boxes it is a 135gr bullet going 1400 fps. They might make something hotter, but I don't have that to try. I believe Black Hills Ammunition also makes a good 10mm load. For my reloads, I go for an intermediate load of 180gr bullet at 1200 fps.

Ive handloaded the 180g 10 to 1350fps. It really comes down to case capacity. There is no magic just physics.

I've had Sig P229s in 9mm, 40 S&W and 357 Sig. Recoil for the 357 Sig seemed to fall somewhere between the 9mm and 40 S&W for a gun this size and weight. I'm not sure how the 357 would feel in a lighter weight, polymer gun like your M&P; I've found FS M&Ps shoot softer than a lot of other guns. The 357 Sig does make quite a bang, though.

10mm PRVI Partizan Ammo, is said to be mild. Their PPU180 gr JHP is listed at 1080 fps, but actuall chronograph readings show it to average 880 fps. 915 to 845 fps.
I have been loading my 357Sig ammo 121 grain JHP @ 1400 fps, my 200gr Hornady XTP's run 1200+ fps

Both cartridges are "premium" self-defense calibers that will never fail you, if you load your weapons with the best defensive ammunition available. I love "Double Tap" for 10mm and Federal Tactical or Cor Bon for the .357 Sig. I carry a Glock 33 on my ankle when on-duty for backup, and it is loaded with Federal's 125 JHP Tactical Bonded ammunition. The Glock 33 replaced my Ruger SP101 in .357 (10 rounds vs. 5 rounds). Don't fret though, I still have my Ruger SP101.
Out of my Wilson (ramped barrel) 10mm CQB, I have had no problems with Double Tap, full-power 10mm ammunition. Out of my Delta Elite (non-ramped) I had "belling" at the rear of the case, so my Delta Elite will be using Winchester Silvertips.
The "bark" of both the .357 Sig and the 10mm proves to me (at least) that I have the necessary power on my side and at my disposal.
Either caliber will serve your defensive needs well.

TAKJR mentioned the Silvertip, try that next time you go shooting. Believe me you'll laugh at the .357 SIG then. And I like em both! Dale

That is pathetic. Seriously, my Speer Lawman .40 was hotter than this PRVI. I only bought two boxes of the stuff. I guess I can use the brass for reloading. Thanks for those numbers.

Thanks guys. You've confirmed my suspicions about the PRVI in 10mm. For the right price, I may pick up some. But I'll stick to better ammo for the most part.
As for hot loads, I still have multiple boxes of original loads from the early 90s. I use them sparingly since some/most aren't made anymore. I'm talking PMC, Federal Hydrashock, Winchester Silvertip, Winchester Subsonic (LEO Marked) and even a box of Black Talons.
I have some newer Remington in nickel cases that still didn't feel any hotter than the PRVI. Based on the state of current 10mm rounds, I guess I need to dust off the old reloading dies.

I _heard_ these are not good for reloading either. Could imagine the brass is not premium quality, but that's just what I understood.

Considering I haven't touched my reloading equipment in 8 or 9 years, it probably won't matter. :-)
But 10mm and now .357 Sig will probably push me to dust it off. For 9mm, .40 S&W, and 5.56, I haven't had a reason to reload for quite some time. I've almost always been able to find some good deals when I needed them.

Just to give you some comparison on overseas ammo prices:
PRVI 10mm is 19,20 Euros per 50
Hornady 10mm is 20,30 per 20 (!)
Federal 10mm is 38,90 per 20 (that sucks!)
most .45 ACP comes somewhere between 20 and 40 Euros per 50pc.

Privi 10mm is weak. So is the WW subsonic in the pic and the WW Black Talon, and the Hydra-Shok. the WW 175 STHP is closer to full power, as are the Hornady loadings. Old Norma and new Underwood are true full power.
I am not saying any of them are bad. Just like the .357/.38, the 10mm can be useful with a wide range of loadings. But comparing the 10mm to anything else when you are shooting Privi ammo is like saying a .357 mag is weak whe you are only shooting .38's out of it.
