Default Aftermarket sights for a 39-2

Hello, new to the forum. I was just wondering if it's possible to put night sights on this old beast.

On a side note, if someone could give me an idea when it was made i would appreciate it.

39-2

Welcome to the forum, no one makes night sights, that i'm aware, of for the 39-2. If they were ever made, they are obsolete now, but I have never seen any. Your 39-2 dates to 71 or 72, the serial numbers skipped around a bit during that time.

BDF8, welcome to The Forum.

I haven't seen anything like a night sight for a 39 on any of the auction or parts sites in 30 years.

You've chosen an excellent gun, though. I have two 39's, and they are the best feeling semi-auto I own. The grip fits my hand perfectly.

Best of luck in your search, and if you actually come across a source please let us know.

Again, Welcome!

At one time MMC made a replacement rear sight for the 39/59 series. I've seen them come up for sale occasionally on the auction sites. I'd recommend setting up an automatic search that will email you when one is listed. Might take a while, but one will eventually come up for sale.

One major problem in rigging up night sights for a 39-2 would be that the front sight is integral with the slide, not staked in as on many other semiautomatic pistols.

Here's that aforementioned MMC rear sight....

wow, that MMC looks great. Thank you for the responses. I love the gun, it has had some failure to extract issues at the range but i think it's just the cheap ammunition.

Again thank you for the responses. Is their a way I can tell what type of metal the frame was built with? I heard one is more valuable than the other.

edit* I put a picture of it at the top. It looks almost brand new. I already put the Pachmayr grips on it.

All 39-2's had frames made of the an aluminum alloy. A small fraction of the earlier Model 39 had steel frames, and are collectible. You may wish to peruse the following thread: Steel Frame Model 39 Picture Thread

Very nice 39-2,
Your gun has a fairly low serial and exhibits the early transitional features including the horizontal hole in the hammer spur, the early mag release button and looks like you have a fully enclosed barrel bushing as well as opposed to the later horseshoe style,
You will notice also there is a thin groove machined into the frame at the very front where it meets the slide,
This was for an optional ejection port cover.
Very Early and late 39's do not have this feature but good luck finding a cover,
they are as hard to find as hens teeth.

Im guessing your magazine follower is the older figure 8 shape metal one as opposed to the newer plastic style too .

BTW, back in the 70's and 80's the first thing we did was toss the factory wood in the trash and Pachmayers were all the rage ,
Times change so hold onto those wood grips,
Most people nowadays toss the Pachys and put the factory wood grips back on...
Kinda like having Cragar SS rims on a 69 Vette.....DONT THROW AWAY THOSE BELL BOTTOM JEANS!

Yup. Been there, done that. Of course, in our defense, in that era the 39-2 was a common duty weapon, just a tool like the Glock is today.

Wow! Thank you so much. It was a gift, and I really am loving it. Been to the range 4 times already. Next is a smith 1911. I do love the pachmayrs though, it makes the gun feel a lot better since i have huge hands. I'll hang on to the originals.

Your extraction problems are, probably, the result of a weak (likely original) extractor spring. One of my early 39-2s suffered a spate of failure to eject, and replacing that spring, along with a new recoil spring, cured it completely. Remember, it is probable that the original spring is still in there, and it is about 40 years old.

No night sights for a 39, but S&W did make an optional fully adjustable sight (windage and elevation) to replace the stock windage adjustable only rear sight. If you really want "night sights," I remember there was some outfit making stick-on luminescent dots which would fit most sights, front and rear, sorry, can't remember the name of the firm.

Thanks for the reply, any info on where to get some new springs? and for the extractor, should I just get the new spring, or the whole assembly?

Default Extractor

I know your post is 6 months old, so I don't know if you already resolved your extractor issue, but when I bought my 39-2, I noticed I had extractor issues as well. It would either stove-pipe or double feed, and the problem seemed to get worse over time. It didn't matter if it was factory loads or reloads, it jammed with both.

I finally got sick of it and contacted S&W. They had me send it in to them and they fixed the issue. Haven't had an issue with the extractor since. I think it cost me around $75 or so...but this was a number of years ago. Well worth it though.

Again, bringing up an old thread again, my apologies. I was just inquiring to see if you remembered what they did at the factory to getting it running right? I bought a new extractor spring from numrich. Now I'm kicking myself for not getting a recoil spring as well.
