Problems wiht a 22A

My friend has a S&W 22A. The last time we went to the range together, he had so many stovepipes, failures to feed, and feeding jams he couldn’t shoot. Additionally when he took apart his gun and cleared the action, after the next shot, if the round would feed, the gun wouldn’t fire (I think the hammer did not cock) and he couldn’t open the action, he had to take the gun apart to clear the round from the chamber.

He was using CCI standard velocity ammo, but we also tried some Federal high velocity with the same results.

Is this something anyone is familiar with? Does the gun need to go to a smith?

Sounds like he may have a couple of issues. Try a different brand of ammo to see if that helps the ejection issues. For the feeding issues, take a look at the feed ramp for any burrs. Mine had issues and after the feed ramp was polished, I had zero feeding issues. Also make sure the gun is clean and the recoil white spacer is not broken.

I have had no trouble with bulk Federal or bulk Winchester...avoid the WWildCat though. How many rounds so far? I've seen some that fired great out of the box and others that needed some range time to settle in...kind of like most small caliber autos. My suggestion is to keep shooting with good ammo and it will most likely improve quite rapidly.
 
Took me about 500 rounds of frustration to find perfection.

The problem may be, others here much much smarter & knowledgeable than I, the recoil spring. It would seem to me that a new one may be too strong. This would not allow the slide to fully slide back and potentially not allowing the spent shell to eject, pick up the next cartridge, and/or cock the pin/trigger properly.

Anyone with much much more experience please add your 100 cents to my .02.
 
I bought a new Talo 22a last fall and had some ammo issues but it likes most ammo . The last issue you had of not cocking and the action sticking is the barrel is not on correctly. Now listen my Talo did the same thing but after I had it awhile . I went to my range loaded aclip racked the slide ,aimed and fired . Pressed the trigger again and nothing, pulled on the slide and it was stuck and no matter how hard I pulled it would not open . After staring intently at it I noticed it appeared to have alarger gap above the slide . Now this gap is still quite small but the recoil spring was more visible then I thought before . Well I got the barrel off with the slide forward , removed the slide and looked everything over then reassembled it , but it stillseemed like to large of a gap , so I pulled the barrel of again . Everything seemed alright so I put it back on and the gap was smaller , so out of curiousity I pulled the barrel again and reinstalled an there was the gap so I pushed the barrel take down in and reset it again , gap gone gun functions great . This sounds odd but I actually tried it acouple of times with the larger gap and it always locked up but I can't find a burr or anything else even after full disassembly . My gun rarely does it anymore so I'm figuring there was a high spot somewhere and is wearing down .I have never heard of this before nut maybe this could help with one or maybe both your problems .

One thing I found was that you need to keep it really lubed up to get the best results. After 5 or so magazines I give it a squirt of lube. Eliminated all my FTF and FTE problems. Also a good buffing on the slide area and feed ramp.

Went to the range today and the 22A worked fine. All we did different was to replace the white recoil buffer. The old one looked OK but we put a new one in just for grins. It worked. That's our story and we are sticking to it.
