I am trying to install a Pachmayer wrap around grip on a S&W 669. The pistol had the one piece stock grip. I ordered a back strap from S&W and found a NOS Pachmayer wrap around grip. It looks like the little knobs are too far apart to fit the frame. Has anyone installed these grips and can you give me some direction before I mess this up.

If your 669 came with the factory one piece Delrin grip, then it is a transitional model, and actually has a model 6906 frame and uses the 6906 grip.....a true 669 uses a two piece grip with a seperate backstrap, or mainspring housing.....if it is a transitonal, the serial prefix will be in the TBU or TBW range, and 669 grips will not fit.....pictures would help, and if it is a transitional, it is not common, it's a keeper.....

The SN prefix is different that those you posted. It's "TAS", but I'm sure you're correct in that it's not like the other 669's I've looked at, even though it is marked Model 669. Not knowing the difference, I ordered the backstrap from S&W, that was for the 469. Here are a couple of pics. Let me know if others would help.I'm seeing some Hogue grips for he 6906, would those work on this pistol? And would i need to change the back strap or will it just replace the Delrin grip? Thanks for the help.

Yes, the hogue grips will work on your pistol....what you have there is a third gen frame, so any third gen 69 series grips will work, I have never seen a model 669 with a round trigger guard, ever, or one that has a black (blued) trigger.....based on the second gen slide, which is a true second gen variation, and the much later third gen frame stamped with a much earlier serial number, I would guess that you have a model 669 that had the original frame replaced by Smith & Wesson, who then stamped the original serial nimber on the new frame.....a call to S&W should clear it up....notice you have the safety indicator (red dot) on both the slide and frame? At first I thought you had a 6906 with a 669 slide, but the serial number and model number stamped on the frame are pretty clear indicators that it has a factory replacement frame.....

Your serial number puts it in the 1987 range, yet the round trigger guard did not appear until much later, about 1991....here are two model 6904's that are only one year apart, one from 1990, the other from 1991.....newer has round guard, earlier has square......and as mentioned earlier, the second gen 669 never came with a round trigger guard or a blued hammer or trigger, so it sure looks like a factory frame replacement was done in your case, also I would guess that yours does not have a half cock hammer position, as this was eliminated early during third gen production, at any rate it's unusual to say the least, and still a keeper, enjoy it....

Thanks for all the information on my pistol. I think I'll see if S&W will let me return the back strap for a refund. I'll try to sell the 669 grips, and then get a set of Hogue grips. Or just put the Delrin grip back on at call it good.
