So I bought a S&W .22S from a friend. It looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a long time. I took it apart to clean it . While cleaning it i accidentally hit t the hook piece on the barrel assy. It didnt take much to break it off. It looks like it is made of some sort of pot metal. Anyone know if i can buy just the top rail or do i have to buy a whole new barrel assy?

I checked on another forum about this problem. A guy said that the same thing happened to his S&W .22a. He said he continues to shoot the gun with no problems. He says it is not a part of the structural integrity of the gun and it is just there as an aid when taking the gun apart for cleaning. Im a little iffy to shoot any kind of firearm when i know it has a broken part. Anyone have any comments or thoughts to add?

I did check out the barrels on the S&W website. The problem is that I only paid $100 for the gun. The barrel replacements are around $161. I was hoping to be able to find just the sight rail since it is detachable from the barrel itself. So far no luck. You would think the part would be sold separately but so far all I can find is the whole barrel assy. I was hoping for a cheaper fix but if my only option is to buy the whole barrel assembly, I might as well buy a new gun.

I dont really know what kind of warranty would be on the gun. Like i said, i bought it used and i am at fault for the damage :(

Just as i feared.. Went to gunparts.com. I found an exploded print and they number the whole barrel assembly as one part.. Meaning I have to spend $150 to $161 to fix it. Junk.. I would rather spend the cash on a new gun..

I think I just shoot it my self. The given piece was made of such soft metal. A bump manged to break it off I would assume that its nothing major. Worse case before junking the gun ask a local gun smith to take a look. They might tell you its nothing shoot it and enjoy. Also calling Smith and Wesson would not hurt. Whats the worse they can do tell you they cant help.

Nice. Thanks for all the info guys. I will be definatly looking into all my options. Thanks again. I will let you guys know what comes of it.

Call S&W customer service, they are always helpful, and I'd bet they will cover it under the lifetime warranty (they usually aren't very picky about who the first owner is, etc.). Really, they want to build customer loyalty, and will probably send you a pre-paid return pick up tag, and will repair the gun under warranty and ship it both ways at their cost. Try it, it can't hurt.

It's admirable that you fessed up, but as others have said, give the factory a call they may still cover the damage. Be honest and let the chips fall.
