all things being equal-which should I buy? a circa 1996 NIB Interarms PPK/s or a NIB Smith & Wesson Version? I'm leaning towards the old interarms but I am worried about service should I ever need it.

Buy the old one. There have been some glitches with the S&W versions.

I have one of each, and honestly can discern no difference in performance or reliability. Over at the Walther forum, they have little use for the S&W-made PPK and PPK/S.

My vote goes to the S&W version if you plan to shoot it and carry it. If it is for collecting, probably the Interarms.

As for service of the Interarms PPK/S, you might check with Earl Sheehan up at Earl's Repair Service to see if he will service your Interarms PPK/S if you buy it. He is not cheap, but the work is first class. He is a Walther authorized dealer and service/warranty station. Here is his web address:

Neither, you should buy yourself a S&W 3913/3953/908 or variant. These are basically the same size and weight guns, but the S&W is chambered for a more powerful cartridge and is reliable.

Here is my Walther PP lying on top of my S&W 3953.

I agree. The 3953 does everything better than the Walther.
