First post here but I'm both an avid firearms enthusiast (both professionally and personally) and have several fine examples of 3rd Gen Smiths that seem to replicate every time I open my safe.

My questions are about my most recent acquisition, specifically a 4513TSW.

The first question: Can I use the 8rd 4506/4566 mags as a spare? My 4513TSW is the 7 round, no rail variety but I'd like that extra round in a spare mag.

Second question: Has anyone sent one of their pistols to Novak in WV for the 3rd Gen duty action trigger job? It currently has Novak night sights (they're dim but functional) but the trigger pull is really disappointing. Not at all like my 1076 or my 5906. Really pretty heavy in double action.

I like the 4513TSW and I'm going to a plain clothes gig in two months where we are encouraged to carry "non-issued" firearms that conceal well for us. I would like the 4513 but I want a little trigger work done first if I'm going to carry it for that purpose.

Thanks, gents. Your input is greatly appreciated.

I can't answer either of your questions;sorry. I would like to ask you one, though. Is there any way you can post some pics? I have never seen a 4513TSW seven round non rail. I wasn't aware they even existed. The SCSW doesn't mention them, but of course, that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I would love to see some pics!

I'm already headed into the office... I'll get some photos when I get home.

It does have the rivets where the rail would have been but the frame isn't cut out for the rail... So I don't know exactly where it falls within the 4513TSW spectrum.

The 4506 mags should work just fine in your pistol. I have never sent a gun to Novaks for the action work but I have heard they no longer work on 3rd Gen. S&Ws. Might want to call them before you send the gun. I don't know why they would quit, unless they can't get the parts they need?

We have a few 4513TSW devotees around here, notably 18DAI and a couple of others. Maybe they can tell you more about Novak? My own gun has a "decent" trigger action fairly typical of the 3rd Gen. guns I have been around, which is to say not great, like a tuned 1911, but way better than any M&P (the plastic ones) and certainly good enough for what I would use the gun for. It's not meant to be a target pistol. That said, I once owned a 4516 that shot like a target pistol. I am hoping my new-to-me 4513 shoots as well.

Congrats on your 4513TSW! :) My favorite 45 carry gun. The rail free 7 round mag variant is a scarce piece.

I carry the 7-round S&W 45XX mags as spares for my 4513TSW V1. The 8-rounders work fine too.

As far as trigger work, I'd call Wayne Novaks shop and check. A few folks have been posting that he is "not taking anymore work in". I think that only applies to 1911's, not S&W 3rd gens. I've had two guns worked on at Novaks and been very satisfied. He is not inexpensive though. Well worth the cost, to me.

Another source for good work would be Karl Sokol of Chestnut Mountain Sports. I've not used him, yet, but read nothing but positive reviews on his work. Good luck! Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

I committed the cardinal sin of shipping the pistol off to get work done without taking pictures... I'll track down the photos from the auction and load them in a little bit.

I talked with Karl Sokol (whom 18DAI recommended) and have to say I'm excited to see what he can do with the pistol. It's with FedEx and on the way to him now. His prices are extremely competitive and his turnaround seemed substantially less than Novak (not accepting new work) and S&W PC (several months).

Also learned from S&W that my pistol was made in January of 2006. That's pretty cool, though the 26 minute wait time to talk to someone at S&W was substantially less cool.

So what all are you having done? Is it costly, or reasonable?

I'm going to have him do what essentially comes down to a "duty/action carry job."

Basically, I want the double-action pull down to 6ish pounds and single action cleaned/crisped to about 4.5/5 pounds.

Cost on his Web site is $95 for the service plus shipping. I will report back once I have the pistol back in my grubby little hands.

Interesting information; thanks for sharing it with us, and welcome to the Forum. I can tell you'll fit right in here!:D

safety?

Retired LEO. Just purchased a 4513 tactical. In box with 3 mags for($460).perfect. condition. My question is the decocking lever does not go into the safe position. I know there was a decock only option for these pistols. Mine is an early model, no rail, 6rd mags. What do you think about it? It is carried as backup to my FNX-45.

Welcome to the forum xraydave1. :)

So when you decock your 4513TSW the paddles spring back up to the ready to fire position? Is there a laser etched warning to that effect on the right side of the slide?

If so, CONGRATS! You have a very scarce gun. The original 6-round mag 4513TSW's didn't come with the machining from the factory to accept that LE decock only option. They had to go back to the factory and be modified to get it. Yours is only the second one I've heard of. The other I saw is in my holster. ;)

I saw mine on Gunbroker last December. It had Novak night sights installed as well as cut down Hogue grips. The "perfect" compact carry 45, for me. Accurate, bet your life reliable, easy to conceal and carry and looks good doing all that. Since mine had more scratches and dings than a NY taxi I was able to get it cheap too. Best gun money that I've ever spent! It has been my constant companion since I recieved it in ear;y January.

As you can tell, I'm a fan of the original 4513TSW...well.....ALL the 4513TSW variants. I suggest you search member Fastbolts posts. He educated me on these fine pistols. Enjoy that 4513TSW! Regards 18DAI

Thanks 18DAI. Any idea what these sell for? Should I use it as a carry piece or put it in the safe?

The early or original variant, rail free with the 6-round mag and cut out grip, brings more than the later 7-round versions.

The last one, on Gunbroker last week, very good condition with original box and two mags, bringing over $700. I think that $550 to $650 would be the average price range, depending on the condition and box, docs ect.

You and I stole ours at less than $500. ;)

I suggest you carry it. There is no finer compact 45 carry gun, IMO. And I have tried just about all of them out there. But I'm not a collector. I'm a shooter. I don't think these 3rd gen pistols have much interest to collectors.

Does yours have the laser etched warning on the right side of the slide? Novak night sights? Any idea what agency was using these? Mine came out of a Missouri pawn shop. Regards 18DAI

All these posts and no pics?? My birthday present from my baby brother, the LEO:

That's what mine looks like... Except that it's in Vermont right now getting all spiffed-up and such.

The gun (with the Hogue grips) fits my hand like a glove. Can't wait to get it back and shoot it again.

I am very confident you will be extremely satisfied with Karl's attention to your weapon.

He has done work for me...although it was a different platform, his work is functional, specific, and outstanding.

Initially I was just a bit suspect, because lot's of fella's say they do premier work....However he isn't shy about turning projects down. In my opinion that says a lot.

I carry a vintage wheel gun he paid attention to, I also gave exact copies to my son's for their needs...He did the work.

In the future I will ask him to consider other projects.
