is this a correct end label?? see picture
Hi All:
I bought a 645 on GB and when i asked the seller answered if the box is numbered to the gun, he said it was
the end label of the one that I just got is on the upper left. Look how much different the other ones are. They have the skew or scan thing. The one that i just got on GB is so milk white it looks like it was printed yesterday- maybe it was!!!
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
I have never seen a label that looks like this and I have seen 100's.
Any of you out there if you would shed some light for me,please. When someone says its the correct box, i wouldnt think to have him take a pic for me!! Thanks again,Haris 1

I'm no expert, but I was working at a gun store during that time period, and it looks fine to me.

It's difficult to tell from the photo but it looks like a label placed over a label. I see a bar code along with some other print on something under the label on top.
Edit: I also see "686" at the top upper left.

Here's a pic of my 645 with matching box. To me, your's appears to be a fake. You can see the bar code on the label underneath, and your's is missing.

It's faked... the fonts are wrong (S&W uses an open top numeric 4) and the spacing between the characters is too small. Plus... like others have said.. no bar code, except for the one on the real label that the dufus seller left on underneath the faked label.

I vote fake, simply because the label doesn't have enough information on it. Also, I've never seen a genuine S&W label have those little 'ears' at the bottom corners.

No doubt about it, that is NOT a correct label. The type font gives it away. Someone got their hands on a blank label and used a modern machine of some type to print it out. I bought a used 3rd gen last year on gunbroker and inside the blue cardboard box under the vapor paper was about 10 unused blank labels that should not have been there. Called the guy I bought it from and sure enough he asked for them back. I tossed them in the trash.

645 fake label
I agree it is a fake- font is wrong- no code at the bottom- no skew stuff- If I am allowed to post a link to a completed auction, i will
But i dont want dings from mods- I am in good standing!!!
Damn- and its a really high condition gun that was 580 shipped so its not that much of a bummer

I don't think I'd let the label be a deal-breaker but it's a bummer nonetheless. I suppose it's possible the seller got the gun and box, used, that way and isn't familiar enough with S&Ws to know the label was bogus.
Nice gun, by the way.

Blank labels are available.Theres a lot of fakery with colt boxes and paperwork and Smiths are probably valuable enough now that we will see more of this.

I took the box end photo and modified the white/black balance to bring up the faint zebra code. The serial number in the almost invisible SKU code looks like TBF6192, which is obviously different from the serial number on the superposed label.
Relabeled box. Fake package.

I have purchased a couple of guns from that same seller and I am confident that he would not have put that label on that box. I am sure he got it that way and is just re-selling it the same way he received it.

A label over a label doesn't strike me as necessarily wrong. Again, I'm not claiming expertise, but sold a lot of these at the time.
And if one were taking the trouble to fake something, wouldn't one remove the original label before sticking on the fake?
Call someone who knows . . . someone at S&W. It's weird, no doubt, but I don't think anyone here can tell you definitively whether it's right or wrong.

This label is for sure wrong and the person who sold it on gb should stand behind it if presented as THE factory box, for me it would be a deal breaker, I have seen the 2 piece box labels for sale and i am sure someone is reproducing these also.

+1 for fake label. though if the firearm is as appears in the pictures and description I wouldn't care about the label.

I have seen similar labels.
Has a barcode but not like any of the others used during the mid-late '80's
Here's one for a 19-4 and they didn't start using the barcodes until 1985.
Haven't been able to find out what the product code means but I suspect it was returned to S&W and then resold by them or something.

To the orignal poster:
Although I'd owned a few 3rd Gens here and there since 1995, in January 2007, I began seriously collecting them. I've had approximately 30 3rd Gens pass through my hands since 2007, and I currently own 19 of them, 10 with original boxes. By the way, during my hunt for 3rd Gens, I examined many, many of them with boxes that I did not end up buying.
I will not beat around the bush, based on my experience, your box is fake. Sorry.

Clearly the fonts on the number 4 don't match. It appears a label over issue. We all know the E-bay, etc. market on boxes, labels, etc. It is getting tough. Buyer beware!
