S&W 910S problems

Hello everyone.

I have just purchased my first 9mm handgun and my choice fell upon the S&W 910s. After testing the gun with Geco 124g ammo the gun seems to be jamming every second to third round. The jam appears to be caused by the spent shell not ejecting properly and getting crushed into the barrel when the slide closes. When the gun functioned the ejections seemed to be somewhat weak and the spent brass had a tendency to find it's way into my right breast pocket.

I asked the dealer if anyone had encountered similar issues with this type of ammo (Geco) but he said this brand was regarded as highly reliable and very popular. Not quite accepting everything the seller stated about this ammunition, I purchased a box of Sellier & Bellot 115g 9mm and ran through the gun. This time the gun "only" jammed up every fourth to fifth round, but still this is totally unacceptable behaviour for a semi..

The gun is brand new from the box and these problems appeared immediately so issues related to cleanliness are very unlikely.

What do you guys think, how can this be remedied? I would appreciate DIY tips most of all since i'm located in Norway and sending the gun to a repair centre would be a logistical nightmare..

As a sidenote I attempted to purchase a paddle holster (Uncle Mike's) for this gun as well a thigh holster (Gould & Goodrich) which both were specified to fit this gun but none actually did fit, is there a way to adjust these holsters or should I go for a refund?

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like an issue with either the extractor or extractor spring. Does the claw on the extractor appear damaged?

I should add that even if this gun is NIB, it would still likely need cleaned as nearly all guns are packed from the factory with some type of preservative. Since the 910 series has not been produced in over a decade IIRC, your new gun has been sitting in its box for some time. Maybe the extractor is "gummed" up.

A thorough cleaning, with attention to the extractor area may cure your
problem.

As far as the holster, perhaps it was really meant for a 5906. I believe the 910 series had less machining on the frame than 5906 series and have more "meat" on them. Thus, a holster cut for the '06 may be a little tight.

Hello scwv67 and thank you so much for your response! I will give the gun a very thorough teardown and cleaning before commencing more tests. I will of course also check the extractor tip.
I see that you mention the extractor spring, this is also mentioned elsewhere on the web with regards to 910 jams. I do however fail to understand the S&W way of labeling their springs as they appear to be color coded (red and blue), could I bother you to shed some light on this subject for me since I was not available to find very much info online (feel free to give any recommendations:) ).
As to the holsters, you are absolutely correct, they are indeed also labeled to fit the 5906 series as well. The holsters appear to pinch the gun in the frame area almost to the point of causing scratches...
However jamming issues aside, I really love the way the gun looks and it also appears to be very precise as the bullet goes just where I want it:)

Brumble,

I'm afraid I'm no expert on the extractor springs, only knowing the color coding has to do with weight or tension. I do believe changing one is more of a job for an armorer familiar with them. I don't think changing one is exactly "rocket science", but I understand it's not hard to futz something up either. There is one or more former S&W armorer on this board and hopefully they will see this thread and advise.

Hopefully the cleaning will take care of this issue. It's even possible dried or gummed oil/preservative on the frame or slide rails could be causing the extraction issue by slowing slide velocity enough to prevent proper extraction.

Rest assured, you've come to the best place for all things S&W!

The 910/410 guns are a little "Boxier" so they don't fit well in tight holsters made for 5900/4000 series guns. If the gun is clean and lubed properly and still failing to eject I look for either a lighter recoil spring or hotter ammo.

There's probably nothing wrong with your gun. The trend in bargain
priced 9mm FMJ ammo in the last few years is to weaker and weaker
loading. Why is hard to say. With some revolver rounds this can be
understood if there are old low quality guns out there for the cartridge
but for autos that rely on a minumum level of power this is
inexcusable. I guess the manufacturers think in these times people
will buy anything. S&B 115 gr ball is some of the worst 9mm I have
ever tried. Barely breaking 1100 fps it will not cycle the action on some
of my guns. I have old Geco 124 gr FMJ that chronographs over 1200
fps in my Browning HP. Recent production of the same chronographs
about 1050 fps in the same gun. If your gun is new I suggest cleaning
any possibly dried grease from it and lightly lube and try it with ammo
known to be full power before you conclude it has a problem.
