A question for Fastbolt, or any of the other experts here!

I searched the forum first before asking. My 6906 rattles when loaded. Its not the magazine rattle spoken about in the other thread.

When the magazine is removed and the pistol shaken, there is only a very slight sound from the slide/frame.

When any of the 4 magazines themselves are shaken while loaded or empty, they make no sound at all.

But when either a loaded or empty magazine is inserted into the pistol, there is a rattling noise upon any movement of the gun, even slight. This happens with the chamber loaded or empty, and happens with the 11 rd mag, the 12 rd mags, and the 15 rd mag with adapter.

The sound seems to be coming from the pistol itself. Could it be the parts of the magazine disconnect inside making the noise?

Thanks for any help.......

This is common with double column single feed magazines. When loaded, the cartridges are double stacked in the lower body of the magazine, then as the magazine tapers, they merge into a single column for feeding. When a fully loaded magazine is inserted with the slide closed, this puts pressure on the top cartridge, forcing it and the others downward. This downward pressure takes the cartridges, in transition from double to single, away from the tapered wall of the magazine, causing the rattle you hear.

Perfectly normal.

xcpd69,

Thanks for the reply.

So don't load the gun and then top off the magazine?

Interdasting! Does this only happen to Smith 3rd gens? My Beretta M9 and 84 don't rattle.

ANY pistol using a double stack magazine which tapers to single stack at the top can be prone to this issue, regardless of brand. It is not any more characteristic of S&W's than any other brand. If your other brand pistols (with the same magazine design) don't exhibit the problem, great. This does not mean that they never will, though.

my 6904 and my beretta px4 compact does this also...

The solution is to stop shaking your gun. No one's going to hear it unless you're suddenly afflicted with Saint Vidus' dance. My Glock will also do that, it's not uncommon.

LOL! It actually rattles without much movement.

After xcpd's and K-framer's posts, I took my three double stack guns and checked them out. xcpd was exactly right. I could have sworn that the rattling was coming from the gun, but when I just loaded the top round from the mag and did not drop the mag and top off, the noise stopped.

Strangely, when I dropped the mag and removed a few rounds, the rattle comes back. This happens with all the mags, 11, 12, and 15 round.

I did all I could to get the 15, 18, and 20 round MecGar mags for the M9 and the 13 round mags for the 84 (Beretta and MecGar marked) to rattle, but they stay quiet. Fully loaded, partially loaded, fully loaded with one in the chamber - guess I am lucky with those.

Still love my 6906, just never seen this before! :)

Guess Ill stop topping off the mag in the Smith.

Thanks for the info. The Beretta mags are pretty new. After they get a few thousand rounds thru them, if they turn into rattlers Ill know what is happening.

SMSgt beat me to it. ;)

Guns rattle.

Magazines rattle (doesn't matter whether they're double or single stack, although double stack, by their design, do tend to rattle more often).

Obviously, it's not possible to know what's rattling in any particular gun without examining that gun.

If you're shaking (or being shook) hard enough for someone to hear your gun rattle, you probably have bigger problems than the gun's rattle. ;)

I couldn't say for sure whether it's your magazine rattling or the gun itself. I know mine has a lite rattle whether I have a magazine in or not. I know what is rattling on mine. there's a piece called the sideplate assembly that has a rod going from one side of the frame to the other that holds the ejecter and magazine depressor, the hammer, The firing pin safety lever, and the sear release lever. The firing pin safety lever and the sear lever sit right next to each other and apparently don't fit very tight together and that is why it rattles on mine. I know that's what it is rattling on mine because I took the magazine out and took the slide off and it still rattled and when I held down those two levers the rattle stopped.

I've had my Glocks, Berettas, XD/Ms, S&Ws, etc rattle when fully loaded. What I usually do is push the top round down a few times or take it out and reinsert it to make it stop. I mainly do this on carry guns otherwise I'd sound like a grandfather clock when walking around.
