617-4 Rattle

Picked up a new to me 617-4 today and when I got it home I'm noticing it rattles when tipped forward or backwards. It was not the hammer block, but a distinct loose part in there.

Being curious, I took it apart and found a little rod inside the rebound slide spring - that was making the noise. None of my other revolvers have this. What's it supposed to be? What happens if I just dump it out of there?

The pin inside the rebound spring is (was?) standard for N-frame revolvers. I've never heard of a K-frame so equipped, someone must have "enhanced" yours. In any case it does not affect function one way or another. If the rattle bothers you take it out and forget about it.

The pin's purpose is to act as a trigger overtravel stop. (SA)

This is my newest S&W. My 18 has a cut behind the trigger guard abs a little metal tab poking out for a trigger stop. My 66 has the cutout but it's empty.

I can see the benefit for SA but does a trigger stop really do anything for you DA?

Those bar-in-the-rebound spring stops are all too short to do anything. If you want one like that, that actually works, you'll have to make a longer one yourself. They are fiddly to get right. They have to be + or - a couple thou. to be effective. It's much easier to do a good back-of -the-trigger, trigger stop.
