I've got a hankering for something I think Smith never made. I would like a full size, single stack 9mm DAO, preferably with an alloy frame. I've got a 3953 but I would like something with the full 39xx grip. Did they make anything like that? If not, can I make one? Gen2 or Gen3. I can't think of a frame to start with to incorporate the extended slide of the early DAO which I prefer but I think the TSW style DAO parts could be fitted to a 439 or 3904 or even a 909,........am I right?

With all the 3rd Gen model variations how did they miss this one?

Small world. I stumbled across that thread late last night after posting this question. Something here directed me to Midway with a closeout on single-stack mags(thanks for that btw)and from there I saw mention of the 3946(hey,...what's THAT?!?)while picking up some spare recoil springs. A little googling for "S&W 3946" led me right back here to that thread. And almost no other mention on the web. Except for the possibility of one or two test pieces it doesn't look like the model actually exists. At any rate I don't think I'll be expending much effort in a search for one or for the 3983 that gets mentioned in the same thread. I'm not looking for a one-of-a-couple collector piece,.......I want it as a shooter.

So I guess I need to look a little deeper into the self-manufacturing angle. I can see where the TSW DAO parts can be easily fitted to any 39XX or probably even to the X39 Gen2 guns but I really don't want the TSW style DAO. I WANT the early style DAO with the round firing pin retainer(clenching my little fists and stamping my little feet).

I've got complete parts sets from both a 3953 and a 5946. If I use the trigger/hammer and slide assembly from one of these kits, what can I do/what will I end up with? I know the rear of the slide will overhang any available frame(I think I remember seeing a pic of such a combination posted here in the past). If I recontour the rear of the slide to match up with the frame that will leave the partially cocked hammer visibly exposed, but since this is strictly a CCW experiment I don't think that will matter. I'd like to use a 39-2 as a donor frame, but that won't work with the firing pin safety,....right? I guess I could maybe remove the FPS but I don't like that for a host of reasons. A 439 might make a better starting point, but 1), I haven't got 439s laying around like I do 39-2s, and 2), I definitely don't want to start with a square trigger guard frame.

Looks like it's time to do a little bit of Frankensteining in the lab,..................mwuahahaha!

The 3904/06 were only in production for a couple of years. I think they were killed off by a combination of compact single stacks that had one round less capacity and the full size double stacks that had 5-6 rounds more capacity.

For that reason, I think that while S&W might have planned for a DAO version, it never saw production. The parts at Numrich seem to be mostly those that would fit the 3904/06 and some might fit the double stack guns as well.

Just my guess of course.

I always like the threads about the 3904/06s and 909s and I think I wouldn't mind one
until I realize I don't care for anything DA/SA so the thought passes quickly - now a 3946
would definitely scratch an itch!

As an aside, I remember when the 909s came out in 95ish just as I was starting college for
my LE degree - it was the start of the 10-round mag limit and I thought, "that wouldn't be a
terrible duty pistol" plus it wouldn't require all the magazines-on-letterhead games that were
required at the time.

Somebody go find one of these.

I'm making some headway. I slapped a 5926 slide on a 3953 frame to get an idea of how exposed the stub hammer is in a standard length slide. Looks to be not a problem. The 5926 slide has the round firing pin retainer since the decock lever is frame mounted instead of slide mounted. I believe this would be the perfect slide to use in the conversion, but obviously it's something of a rarity itself. Fortunately, I think a little judicious grinding on a 5946/3953/6946 slide will replicate it and I have those as spares. Still deciding on a donor frame. I may test on a doggy 39-2 but will eventually locate a doggy 439(or 909).
