Any one know if production cost was the only reason the 22 A was deleted from the Rimfire Line , and when was the last production year for the pistol,

For the rimfire folks check the Lounge section on this forum I got a Excellent Answer to my question there.

It's one of my favorite .22s.

I must agree with you its a great 22 , I guess its a sign of the times ,seams like polymer and plastic is winning , the tried and true are retired and or just forgotten about, it has happened to so many S&W Use To Produce.

stumpie, my 22A-1 is all stainless steel barrel with aluminum frame(I believe?). It is a camo -1 so, has the plastic grips. It is very accurate and with CCI minis very reliable. I've mounted an Ultra reflex sight on it so , it's very compact and great "survival gun or bale out gun" also.

I don't have a 22A-1, but a friend at the range had a frame crack a few months ago (saw the event, it was a very well-used with 10s of thousands of rounds, so not completely a surprise). He sent it in, and they sent him a .22 Compact as a replacement, explaining that they no longer had new frames to replace the original.

So I would expect they are out of stock, and out of production as of earlier this year.

I still see them at the LGS, and they advise that the distributor still has some limited selection, but no new ones coming from the factory.

Talked to a CS guy at Smith the other day. He said they can't make the 22 Compact fast enough to fill orders.

The guy at local gun shop told me they were no longer being made and the 1 I was looking at was the last one he had or would get new , so it came home with me, happy to hear Smith did replace the defective one with at least another model, Smiths Warranty was always tops.

Please post some pictures of the compact model you speak of? Shorter barrel?

I wish I still had mine, was a great little hunting set up. I got mine used and put a 2x BSA scope on it, was wonderfully accurate. Someone talked me out of this gun, guess I will have to consider finding another one. Here it is with a nice ruffed grouse I got with it from about 12 yards with a head shot.
